All About Pocket Knives

Got this G.W. Stone custom today. The sheath looks as though it was carried a little, but the knife appears mint. The in-hand feel and balance is indescribably perfect.

Roland, the self guard is not the only indicator of an "outers" knife, Case and some other brands made self guard "sticker" knives. The OP knife more closely resembles a sticker than an outers. Outer was an older term for camper, outers knives were cheap small fixed blades (4" blades) meant for folks going on "outings", or going camping. Good small inexpensive general purpose fixed blades. Almost all American companies who made fixed blade knives in the 1930s made outers knives. Outers is more of a pattern name, more like a pocket knife pattern name like say sleeveboard pen knife, all outers look the same as do all sleeveboard pens. Outers pretty much all have the same blade style and length.

Roland the guy I got it from is a retired LEO, said he bought it from G.W. at his shop. As best he can recall it was in the early 1980s.

I had thought "Outers" was the name of the person who designed the integral type guard.
The advantage of knowing so little about knives is that you can learn something new every day.

Thanks everyone. Terry I agree. He was a perfectionist and very proud of his work. If it wasn’t right in every way it didn’t leave his shop. Attention to detail and little things not readily obvious are apparent especially when you have one of his knives “in hand”. For example this one has perfect balance and the handle is hafted for the hand. It’s actually larger/wider at the butt end than near the ricasso, which facilitates a firm grip, like a pommel without a pommel.
