All About Pocket Knives

this is the same knife as decribed in topic below, please take a look, i had just found it in my granddads old chicken house, the stampings are as in the topic before-KA-BAR UNION CUT. CO. OLEAN, NY any help would be appreciated thanks

A little ragged looking now but quite old. Made by a respected American maker and it comes from your Grandfather. That is just too good!

oh yeah, too cool. thanks for the pics. no more than 0000 steel wool and oil to remove any still active rust. don't know how to date any closer than by the tang mark. need a closeup of it.

not exactly,but i will guess pre 1951.

So you say Aug. 15, 1923 and not be off by more than 6 1/2 months. Not many knives can be dated that close. Your a lucky knifer bladeaddict.

Actually, a patent is good for 17 years from date of issue, so I think a knife marked with a patent date could be as much as 17 years (maybe more) newer than the patent date marked on it.

patent date has nothing to do with date of manufacture.

This one does not have date. It has pat applied for. When patent is issued the maker may place it on knife. So this knife was IMO made sometime between application date for patent and issue date of patent.

no, i did'nt know that was stamped on your knife. it means it was produced before the patent was approved. it was issued in mar, 1924. so, around that time. close to the patent date, very cool!

i'll take some better close-ups and put them up along with the winchester razor, i appreciate all the help guys, thanks
