All About Pocket Knives

My father is looking for information as to the rarity and value regarding a Coast Cutlery 2 blade folding hunter knife. It is of similar size and style to the Kabar 1184 form the 60s, slightly slimmer. It was my grandfather's knife and my grandmother said he had it for years prior to his passing in the late 60s. I have been unable to find any information online. Thank you.

Here is something on the history of Coast Cutlery. Only a guess on my part and I have no way to verify this but suspect many of the Coast pocket knives were actually made by other companies for them. That was a very common practice. If you continue to check ebay for listings one will come up eventually. I don't think it would be a high dollar knife to a collector, but is priceless to your family. I just looked on Ebay and some of the current Coast knives are made in China and it looks like during the 1980's some were made in Japan. I'll bet Dale knows a lot about these knives?

Most (all ?) of the older Coast Cutlery knives were made in Japan and are of good quality but have little collector interest so prices now are low.

Those 2 blade hunters were popular back then. So practical to have two blades that complimented each other so well. Seems like everyone made that pattern, some svelte and graceful, some heavy and clunky. It’s a very cool thing to have a knife from your Grandfather.

Two of my heirloom knives are cheaper two blade hunters, priceless to me. One was my Dad’s the other my paternal Grandfathers.

Western made the 2 blade folding hunters for Coast Cutlery. The name has been around for a long time and they sourced their knives from Western as well as other U.S. companies.

I had a Coast. Bought it back in the '90s. Ended up sending it to Big Monk. It was made in Japan and it was a slick motor scooter.

I remember calling them several years back. I talked with a nice lady by the name of Jan Muckeledorf or similar. She was very helpful.

About when did Coast switch from having USA made knives to knives made in Japan ?

I have owned just a few Coast knives, but have always thought this style of Coast knife looked a lot like the Ranger knife made by Colonial. I guess I just assumed Colonial / USA made them for Coast?

I bought a small Coast folder on Ebay a couple years back that looks like a miniature Buck 110, just slightly larger than a Buck 55. Very well made and finished. Says Coast/Germany on blade, D 1.4110 on tang, which I think is equivalent to 440A steel. Excellent EDC for the small price I paid.

I have this Coast "made in Japan" single blade. 4&1/8 closed. Looks like a Buck 110 but smaller. Well made and tight. thanks

is this related to Coast to Coast Hardware Stores? I we had one but they may not have had a store name brand of knives.

Here are a few pictures of it with a kabar 1184 I recently acquired. It looks to me to look almost identical to some Western 062s I have seen.

I was always under the impression that the Coast folding hunter was a Western, as were some of the Coast marked fixed blades. But my wife says that I have been wrong before.

Nice pair of knives Rsummers. Here is a Coast folding hunter I have shown next to it's twin brother from another mother. Definitely a Western Boulder made knife.
