I found this toolkit knife, in perfect shape, for ten bucks!
Then I looked it up... This is the only one I found online, and I think mine is in better shape. That was a well spent ten bucks!

Oh no, I’m going to guess that $525 one will sit there for a very long time. Still, it’s a double whammy, being both a collectable knife and a VW item. I won’t be selling it anyway.

Actually Gunsil, vintage car tool kits can be worth a fortune, especially in the condition Zoo's is. VW collectors would drool over something like this, seeing as it's probably quite rare.

Actually Willy, that is not an original car tool kit. They were never included in the original tool kits, they were "accessories" you could purchase from the parts department just like key fobs and VW coffee mugs and they were not made by VW. I worked for VW in the 1960s and am well aware of what was in every tool kit. I also still deal in vintage VW and Porsche parts. It definitely has a little "cool" value but collectors will not be drooling over it for big money.

So I guess if it was the actual tool kit, with this accessory included, then it would be very desirable?...
Cause I know that vintage Merc tool kits are worth a small fortune, so that's what i'm basing my info off of. Are vw and porsche tool sets more plentiful, or did merc just produce that many less back in the day?

No VW tool kits included the pictured set. There would also be no place to put it in the factory tool kit which was a naugahide fold over pouch with a central ribbon to tie it closed. It held a steel bar, a few cheapo wrenches, a pliers, a screwdriver with reversible blade with a flat end and a phillips end, and a spark plug/wheel lug double ended socket the steel bar fit into. Would one keep the pictured kit in the car one would likely put it in the glove box.

Sounds similar to the ones in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.I believe the wrenches were made by Hazett.

No, the VW tool kits did not have nice Hazet tools like the Mercedes or Porsche tool kits had. The wrenches in the old VW tool kits were very crude stamped steel wrenches. Being a lifelong German car mechanic I have a lot of Hazet wrenches and factory "special tools", they are very high quality.

One Hazett tool I would really like to find is one of their 4 tiered carts.Several of my friends use them for paint carts.I don't know if they still make them or not but I know they are pretty pricey when they come up for sale. I agree;they are high quality tools.
Another one of my addictions is vintage tools.I was at an estate sale several years ago and bought a few knives as well as some tools.One of the real oddities were several sockets and ratchets that were 9/32nds drive instead of 1/4 inch.

Hey, I like vintage tools too! My prize is an old box/crate hammer that belonged to my dad. He used it at his first job, around 1927. I’ve got a few other oldies too, including a “heart” Stanley screwdriver and a very old multi tool that opens like pliers in the middle, and has a hammer on one side and a hatchet on the other.

I found a Stahwille snap ring plier at a local flea market for $5--looked them up and they are $60 new! And they're really darn good snap ring pliers--they make a ton of sockets and wrenches as well. German tools are superior than a lot of American brands. Not bashing American brands, but I feel many got lazy in quality; and outsourced a number of lines overseas. I like Knipex's tools, but I find their hardening to be a problem. They're hardened in a way to where if you're dealing with any hardened fastener, it will wear your tool jaws, not the fastener. That's good in some places (like antiques restoration), but not cheap hardware on a farm. Vs impossible to screw up anything from Channellock.

Great score on that tool set! I don't get a lot of ad knives. You can get one for some small machine shop or other business for peanuts less than a regular version. Yet, anything with Apple, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, VW, John Deere, Porsche--you're gonna pay a ton when you find one.


Been looking for a MKI or MKII Golf (Rabbit here in the States) that I plan to tinker with a bit--if not a GTI, I'll add a turbocharger. But, I want a solid roof--every danged one I see for sale around here is a cabriolet. The pickups have gotten insane in pricing. That would be the perfect little runabout for me, however.

Yeah, when I started wrenching in 1968 at an independent VW/Porsche repair shop one of the German guys had one of those rolling tub tool boxes. Two years later when I went to a dealership there were a couple German mechanics with them. they work well but as cars evolved more tools were needed so those guys all bought bigger tool chests. Yes, Stahlwille also makes fine tools, I have some of those too. BUT, Snap-On is still one of the best tool manufacturers in the world and highly regarded even in Germany. Snap-On wrenches will not break as easily as Hazets and have superior finishes. Danged expensive though, but the best available. It would cost around 40-50,000 dollars to buy the tools in my chests these days.
