All About Pocket Knives

Just got this cabinet off Craig's List. The guy I got it from bought it on fleabay 4 or 5 years ago. He said he paid $200 with shipping from some dude in NY. The seller obviously shipped it but he failed to include the key. When the buyer tried to contact the seller, crickets. Flebay couldn't/wouldn't help him since he paid for a display case and got a display case.



The guy has had it standing in his garage since he got it. The guy's wife told him it needed to go.

One of the sections has a model # / price list on it with a 1999 date on the label.

Not bad for $50. Just have to figure out how to get it open without destroying it. The back panels are melanite with 12 small staples holding each panel in place. Obviously, I can pry them off and replace the locks that way, but I'm gonna try a couple of other ways first. Each section has an 800 number on it, which is Kabar's menu number. I have already called it and have a call in to customer service. I'm hoping they can atleast give me a brand name on the locks o a locksmith will have a clue as to how to start. I may get lucky and they still have sets of spare keys lying around. Not gonna hold my breath on that one, though.

Those type of locks are fairly easy to pick with a cheap lockpick set.
Once you get them open the locks can be changed very easy.

Wayne, if you take them to your local locksmith he will likely be able to open them and make you a key.

Bingo! I’ve had a couple of display cases of various kinds that I got without a key. Took them to a locksmith who opened them and either made a key or changed out the lock, for reasonable fee. Most locksmiths will know just by looking what kind of key is needed.

Well, that's good news.

What are the odds that a random locksmith can unlock them/make a key? I can fit one in the front seat and two in my back seat but would need the truck to take all 4 in. I am assuming they are keyed alike. It sure would be a lot simpler to take 1 in and get a key made.

Nice score. Probably a wafer disc or maybe a pin tumbler lock so should be fairly easy to open. If you don't really need a key the guts can be removed from the lock and then you could open them with a screwdriver or anything that will turn the lock. Not sure what a locksmith would charge.

I've got several knife cases without the keys.
My sister works at ace hardware and she gives me all the cases they don't use.
These type of locks can be opened with a wave rake.
These cylinder locks are very inexpensive and you can configure them to accept one key.
I wouldn't waste money on a locksmith for something you can do yourself.
