Just looking at a new 6318 I bought to add to my seventies case collection and I noticed that the Spey Blade was not marked For Flesh Only. I know the knife has never Been cleaned and is in mint condition so it wasn’t applied when it was made. Does anyone know what years case stopped marking the Spey blade. My xx and USAs all have the stamp but never noticed it not being on the seventies knives.

Welcome to AAPK.

My observation has been that prior to 1970s the etch was pervasive on the 18, 47, and 087 but the etch was hit or miss by the mid 1970s and discontinued altogether by the early to mid 1980s. However the 18 and 47 patterns seem to have been etched more consistently than other stockman patterns, and I think the 47 was the last to be discontinued. You probably have one of those that was made without it. ::shrug::

Maybe knifeaholic (Steve Pfeiffer) will see this and reply. He may know exact dates for the etch discontinuation.

Thanks for the Info. Been collecting case knives since the early seventies but never thought much about the For Flesh Only when it was stopped being used. Looked through all my knife books but never seen a article on that subject. Found this web site and I really enjoy the case Knife forums.

Here's a few of mine. I know you said 70's but the last one is a USA era.

Love your 92 pattern knives. Big fan of the square boosters. I really like the 32 pattern one of my favorites. Case never made any better knives to me than in the sixties and early seventies.

For some reason, many if not most examples of the 6318 made in 1970-71 did not have the spay blade etch. Also some from the USA era. Other than that Case was consistent in using the etch, til it was dropped about 1982-83.
