All About Pocket Knives

Hi all! This is my first post here, prompted by a surprise I received recently.

The other day I picked up a tool box at my local recycling center/ thrift store and didn’t think much more about it. This morning I took the time to look inside and found what seems to be a pretty nice knife. Made by Remington and, from what I can gather from the info on this site and it’s less than stellar condition, quite old. Pictures are attached for you reference.
The model number stamped on it is R943. R for foldable, 9 for the body style I’m guessing and 3 indicating that it has a bone handle. The 4 remains a mystery.

From the searching I’ve done I’ve turned up A few similar models, specifically the R933 and the R953. Neither of those has two blades like mine though. I’d rather use this knife than sell it I think, but those other models seem to have some value which has piqued my interest in this particular field of collecting.

So now I have two questions...

1- What exactly have I stumbled upon here and what’s it’s collectible value?

2- Are there any good techniques for cleaning and restoration of the handle and the blades? Or do those sorts of actions ruin the collectibility?

Welcome to AAPK. It’s always nice to get a pleasant surprise. On you knife, 94 is the pattern number. There are several knowledgeable Remington collectors here that can tell you more about the value than I can. Sargent's 4th Edition has a picture of your knife on Page 317. The only problem I see with your knife is Massey Ferguson scrawled his initials on the bolster.

Here is my R943. Has been cleaned but is a 5 inch nice bone with a light stamp on the numbers.

That cleaned 943 is really nice.

These are tough to find in any condition. I’ve had this one for years. John D

Here's mine, that I picked up for cheap. Sadly, it's missing the entire bone on the other side. I bought it, thinking I would recover it...but, the bone on these things, is so nice, I haven't been able to bring myself to remove the one remaining good side. So, for now, I just look at the pretty side.

DocB, don’t know if you have interest or not but I have a friend that has a lot of vintage Remington parts and does a good job at repairs. If you want his name send me a PM. John D.

Thanks for the replies everbody! And for more picture of similar knives- they sure are pretty.

As for mine, I’ve dug up a guy near by who restored these types of things and I think I’ll give it over to him for a spruce up. Looking forward to having it be useable again!
