All About Pocket Knives

Greetings folks! I have a friend who is looking for some insight into values on a batch of pocketknives. One of them appears to be a tested era knife (the knife on the left). I have pretty much zero knowledge of Case knives so I figured I'd go to the experts on the subject. The pocket blade has unfortunately seen some pretty serious abuse (as have the blades on the other knives ). These are the only pics she sent, a group shot. Also, what do you think of that Primble? Case manufactured? That bone looks mighty Case-like but I'm not aware of Case ever making knives for them. Here are the pics:

The Case looks like possibly a 06221-1/2 pattern. If so it should be 3-1/4 inches closed length. Made only during the Tested era. I have a couple of them, but not in very good condition. Sargent’s 7th edition lists it with long pull and green bone at $700 if mint. The pictured knife is a long way from mint but it’s a fairly scarce knife in any condition.

I agree the Primble Trapper looks like it has Case jigging but like you I’m not aware Case ever made knives for Primble. But I wouldn’t rule it out either. I have no idea on value.

The Ulster Old Timer is a pretty common knife, probably not worth much.

JMO. FWIW here’s one of my 06221-1/2 for comparison purposes.

Thanks Ken I appreciate your reply. Yep I'm very familiar with the Ulsters, that's a knife for the $5 box. Never seen flea bitten delrin before, probably from a dremel or something of that nature.

I'm amazed at the amount of wear on the entire batch of knives this person has shown me. I think whoever owned them made regular trips to a coarse grinding wheel with the blades since the handles don't show much wear at all.

Case did make some knives for Primble during the XX period, 40-64. I have seen a couple and own one that is a double for a 47 pattern. According to Steve “knifeaholic”, the Case shaped blank shield is common with the knives. I hope I am quoting Steve correctly.

I’d bet if you were able turn that shield over and expose the other side, it would say “Case”.

Ken, we actually did the 'ol shield flip on some old Schrade shields that we used on the Canal Street AAPK ebony stockman. Thought it would be cool to bring some Schrade history into the mix

Yes, as Tom stated, Case did make a very few knives on contract for Belknap with the John Primble stamp.

They are rare, I have only ever seen a few patterns. Most likely made either just before or just after WWII.

That is the first 54 pattern trapper that I have seen with the Primble stamp.

The very first one I ever saw was owned by Rhett Stidham in the 1970's. It was a 5265 pattern, and Rhett said that he did take the shield off and reinstall it and that it was a flipped-over Case shield.
