All About Pocket Knives

I picked up a Robeson 3 3/4 inch serpentine jack in good condition, and I noticed that the stamp was not clear when I bought it. When I had it in hand and could use a magnifying glass I could see that the master blade is double stamped. It reads ROBESON / Shuredge / ROCHESTER (blank space), then ROCHESTER (in larger type) and (blank space) underneath. I used the (blank space) to note that in both cases the word Rochester is pushed off center to the left. If there was a NY stamp it has been obscured. There is a large upper case T under the word Shuredge, with the leg of the T running down through the work Rochester.

The back of the master blade has the pattern number 62266, and underneath there is the lower half of a dog’s head and jaw, as well as a collar.

The pen blade is also a double strike. It reads ROBESON / Shuredge / ROCHESTER and underneath is another ROCHESTER in larger type. There is another large upper case T underneath the word Shuredge. The back of the pen blade is stamped with the pattern number 66 / 622.

The knife is in good condition. The blades are full and tight. It shows some wear and patina, but it is a curiosity that I thought I’d share.

Just going by your detailed and clear description, as I cannot see the details you describe in the photos, the stamps are totally correct for it being a Robeson or a Terrier jack of that pattern.

Cannot explain the double stamping, especially on both blades.

I don't think Robeson would have allowed the knife to ship to market, unless someone wasn't paying attention or simply did not care.

Regardless, the knife dates 1910 - 1916, given the Terrier stamps.

Thank you Charlie. I’m sorry for the poor quality photos. This knife is nothing earth-shattering, but it does seem odd that Robeson recycled some Terrier-stamped blades. Maybe it was assembled about the time the Terrier brand was dropped.
