Chef's, today I have for you, a deconstructed Camillus TL-29, with a screwdriver delete. Reconstructed with OD micarta. I knew those connect the dot coloring books were going to pay off... 2 Hours and 45 minutes of madness...and we finally have a BIG hole... Why stop at one hole...when we can fit another hole, on the same side.
After all, we will be putting a deconstructed / reconstructed...umm...well...

COOL.... I don't think I have ever seen any pics of someone working with micarta.
Looks like the "reinforcing strings" could be an issue. Please post some good pics and show us how you dealt with the strings.

For soldiering.....
Clean mating surfaces.
Apply flux and tin both pieces.
Join pieces and apply heat.... BUT don't get the parts too hot.

I've soldered a lot of stuff, in the past, without any problems, using only flux. What do you mean by "tin" the pieces. Is that the liquid he puts on...after flux?

Tinning is putting a thin coat of solder on each piece to be soldered together prior to making the connection.

I don't know what the metal of this was...the solder just balled up. Tried it twice. Too late, for this project anyway. Pins it is...

Now that the "cat is out of the bag", and the recipient got it...I can quit stalling and finish this thread. Told Jerry it was a late 11th AAPK anniversary / early 34, 000 post present. Let me say that another way...OVER 33,000 posts!!!
So, I fabricated a shield, from a dogtag, that I ordered. The tag was obviously too big, so I cut it down. As stated above...soldering failed. So I decided to pin it; then cut it down to size. I wanted to reattach the rails, for the looks of it. I could have made the pins a little neater...but I kind of liked the rough, rugged & unrefined; but, highly functional look...kinda like a Marine
So chefs, we have for you the deconstructed / reconstructed TL-29...with a deconstructed / reconstructed dogtag and topped with a Marine Corps emblem.
I may have been watching a few too maning cooking shows, throughout the pandemic

Mike, I can't say the "strings" have ever been much of a problem. I did nothing special, for the final result. I think photos enlarge and make things look worse, than they really are. I do oil micarta, after finishing.

Well, the recipient certainly appreciates it and now that I know the name was made from a dog tag I appreciate it even more. As I mentioned in the "Bomb" thread, it's already up on my love me shelf. Jim, I really like the rough and tumble look of it. A lot!!! Kinda fitting for an "old" Marine. Don'tcha think?

Cuz that's a real awesome shelf, and that knife fits right in!
