All About Pocket Knives

This knife is stamped Jim Dandy, on the tang. Apparently from approx 1920-1940. Some are reported to be made by Kutmaster and are also stamped on the tang, with the Kutmaster logo. Mine only has the Jim Dandy, on the master blade...and like other reports...it is a very light stamp, that is well worn. It was missing the Jim Dandy shield, in the black plastic handles. It's a cheap knife. The blades have seen a belt sander somewhere in their life; but they have good snap. I'm a sucker for a long pull and a swedge. I replaced the handles in some mammoth tusk and put a shield on it.. Tried a new quicker means of inlaying the shield...and it shows. Certainly could have done a better job. It has enough character to make an OK user.

I bet ole Jim is glad to be useful again.

I love it! I have one with black celluloid (?) around here somewhere. It’s well used but I’m looking for a better example.

The ones I’ve seen were definitely Kutmaster made. And for those who don’t know, Jim Dandy was a maker of horse and mule collars, part of the harness that held the hames.

Those handles are pretty. You do good work!

Nice save! I love the mammoth tusk scales! I have given up on being a perfectionist with shield inlays and don't worry about it any more. That one will make a great EDC Doc.

Nice job! Replacing shields is one thing, as I get into repairing knives, that's giving me the jitters. I've got pretty medicore hand/eye coordination.

There's a seller with a bunch of knives I want including one of these in similar condition, but with a shield at low prices--the problem is that for some reason, they despite being in the continental US, want $10 a knife for postage, and used a minuscule discount as a loophole to get around offering combined shipping. And, to me, shouldn't cost $10 total shipping for the three knives I want, let alone EACH--a Schrade USA Uncle Henry Trapper, the Kutmaster, and a German-made stag handle fixed blade (altogether, without shipping, are only about $25).

Cutting the inlay for a shield in new scales (that I have spent hours getting just right) is one step that I do not look forward to. Getting a better rotary tool hand-held device has helped a lot, and going slow and taking my time also helps. My main problem is I am a bit short on patience. I agree with you totally on shipping rip offs, no matter how small the rip-off is. I can fit up to 12, maybe even 15 smaller folding knives in a small priority mail flat rate box for $8.30, and that is what I do with my auctions.
