All About Pocket Knives

I picked up this well used Schrade and trying to fix the "proud" 2 blades.
I have filed the kick (I can see some metal has been taken off )but it seems like
the "proudness" has not gone down any.

There is no rust/dirt in the well and all blades have moderate snap. I realize if I file
too much the nail nicks will sink and become worthless.

I know this knife is not worth much but just spending some time experimenting.

Do I need to be more aggressive or is further filing a waste of time? I hope I am filing
in the right place (circled on the last 2 pics)!!

Looks like you are going the right place, but that will take more than a few strokes of a file cut that down enough so those blades aren't proud.

Take 2 or 3 strokes than check to see how far that drops the blade.
Repeat until the tip is no longer proud.

Bob that's not a blade anymore, it's a piece of metal with a nail mark lol. Wow, someone really liked that knife, it's cool to see those well used classics. You'd want to be a little aggressive at first on that one since you have a ways to go. At some point you wind up bottoming out on the spring but I think you still have a little room there.

Holy crap! That's a worn down blade! I just filed down the kick on an old Easy Opener, and used the diamond-coated side of my Leatherman Wave.

I have one I've kept that bad, it's a 4 1/4" Kabar Jack Knife, as I am hoping to A: find one with a good main blade and a busted pen (which is still fine) or B: use it for referecne to be sure I find a good replacement. And, I really like the camo pattern of its celluloid (which I'm watching like a hawk!)

Looks like taking down the kick enough to get the tip in the well will result in losing access to that nail nick.

This may be heresy, but I used a small round grindstone with a shaft in my electric drill to take down the kick on a large Queen 2-blade knife. Took a fair amount off the kick on the main blade, now the point sits below the edge of the liners. The pen blade was more sharpened away, and since it is mostly protected by lying alongside the big blade when closed, I left it alone.

No heresy there. I pretty much always use either a 1" belt sander or the Burr King to take the kick down. This way you can hand hold it and not worry about marring anything in a vise. As long as it gets the job done and still looks good the possibilities are endless.

If you're not interested in keeping the handles original, you can mill a small easy open notch in the frame and handle to access the nail nick as it needs to drop below the frame to keep you from getting snagged. I had the same issue on my old Queen folding hunter, the secondary blade was sitting proud and after filing the kick I notched it to be able to get to the nick. Treefarmer

After filing the kick down enough, do what he said!

I'm not sure that there's enough kick to drop it down that far.

I filed it down so now it looks a little better. Nail nicks still accessible.
