All About Pocket Knives

I've had these 2 for a while. I got the 2OT from Roland last year (I think) and it was my first 2OT so I was a little skeered to mess with it.
When I got it, it was in really nice shape for a knife you just can find. Even though the main blade was tipped..... I was proud to have it.
Somehow, I must have got a good dose of intestinal fortitude. SO, it was time to put a tip on this guy.
Here he is before.... .
I took my time, I made sure I didn't take off too much.... and here he is with a good shine-up on both blades..... .

Then, after that one, I remembered this Schrade-Walden 125OT that had been sitting in my project box and it was also in need of a new tip.

Who ever originally bought this knife must have broke off the tip EARLY and put it in a drawer. Other than the surface rust, there was NO blade wear. Here he is with his new tip. I was happy with the way they turned out. The 125OT was the one I wondered if I could put a tip on it and still have a decent looking knife. The nail nick was so close to the top, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a decent tip on it without getting INTO the nick.
Well, I did and the tip is even inside the blade well where it belongs!

Mike, excellent work ! The lines of the blades flow so well it is not easy to tell they have been re-tipped. And how did you 'shine' the blades ? by hand ? or buffer wheel ? Perhaps you could post an outline of your procedure for getting such a 'natural' looking finish on the blades ? I'm sure i am not the only one who is interested in learning from you.
And, maybe you could make a thread in this forum on how you re-tip a blade ? I have re-tipped only a few blades and my results are no where near as perfect as yours.

Next time I re-tip a knife I will TRY (LOL) to remember to take a few pics as I go.... so I can show y'all my method.

The finish on the blades was accomplished by using a small 3/4" wide hand sanding block/rod thing I made out of a piece of wood. It is about 10" long.
I use the sanding block and a piece of (about) 320 grit paper. I make sure to sand and watch the finish as I go while sanding the blade surface.
(again.... I will try to remember a few pics for next time.....)
Oh..... one other thing...
You have to have a SHARP file to cut a blade.
I use hand tools as much as possible.
Power tools have always helped me make my mistakes MUCH FASTER and DEEPER than hand tools.....LOL.

Awesome work Mike! You have a great eye for the new lines that are needed. If I didn't know that you reprofiled those knives, I don't think I would have ever noticed. I must confess that I draw the lines I want with a marker and then take off of most of what is needed on my bench grinder (coarse wheel first, then fine wheel), and finish the job with a good file. The trick, which I have learned the hard way, is to stay outside of the line when using the grinder, and then cozy up to the line with the file.

Your methods sound very good. I guess I get too afraid of taking off too much too quick.

Mike, sorry to 'bug' you, but with the 320 sandpaper do you go parallel to blade or across it ? What do you then use to remove the scratches from the blade surface left by the sanding ?
