All About Pocket Knives

Perusing one of the local antique shops that finally opened it's doors and after being outfitted with a mask and rubber gloves at the door I found this little gem in the first cabinet I looked inside.No maker's name on it but the blade is marked,"Evans Safety Blade" so that may be the manufacturer. These were made supposedly for women to shave their arms and legs and whatever else they shave.
I bought a similar one several years ago marked,"Razorette" that was made by a company in Detroit around 1940.Not sure if this one is that old but it is in great shape and the,"Price Was Right" as they say: Three bucks.
Been finding a lot of miniature stuff this past week: a bunch of N scale(1/144th)cars and two miniature cap pistols that are replicas of Colt handguns.The razor fit right in with the bunch. To give you an idea of the size the background has lines 1 inch apart.

If the dimensions are similar to mine, it's designed as a travel razor. I have seen razors smaller in their original packaging marked as ladies razors.

And, yes, I use this one. It does take a standard double edge blade and gives a very good shave.

It is quite a bit smaller than a travel razor Steve.As stated the background lines are 1 inch apart.Here is the other one I have called a "Razorette" and a travel razor I have that the case doubles as a stand up mirror.Also a tiny travel razor like yours.

Steve:I use a Gillette adjustable safety razor for the little shaving I actually do. I used to have a full beard and never shaved per se. A bout with throat cancer and some serious radiation therapy 19 years ago left me with very little hair on both cheeks so now I am forced to shave.I still have a mustache and goatee though;for some reason they were spared.
I started accumulating razors when there was a time that pocket knives became difficult to find and wound up getting some safety razors and sharpening devices as well.It's an addiction..... but I can quit.......any time......if I have to.

I picked this Gillette Travel kit last week. Supposed to be from the 60's. The handle is 2 inches long. I plan on using for when I visit relatives. Probably will put the mini lather brush up, and just pack a shave soap stick. The box of razor blades did not come with it. I just put them in for a test fit. The leatherette case is made in Austria.

The razor is from 1969, made third quarter (Jul-Sep).

See the letter "O" just below and left of the REG US? And the "3" below and right of PAT OFF?
A letter designates the year made, in this case 1969, and the number designates the quarter.
Gillette date coded their razors just like Case date codes their knives.

I thought that logo looked familiar! I have a similar kit that I picked up years ago and use the nail clippers regularly.The razor blade package is in German.Here are a couple pics.

I have the same razor, just not the rest of the kit to go with it.
Shaved with this morning, as a matter of fact. Darn fine shave.

It is just stamped,"Germany".A typical inexpensive plated knife likely from the 1950's.

It is just stamped,"Germany".A typical inexpensive plated knife likely from the 1950's.

Check the date code on your razor. That knife was probably made close to the same time.

Probably from the Solingin factory. I once read an article about the Solingin plant produced most of the stainless steel gentlemen knives for export and was the plant that also produce the Hugo brand gentlemen knives which used to be quite ornate. No matter, still a great kit you have!

This morning I shaved using the little Gillette travel razor. Put a new "Feather" brand blade in it. It is a very non aggressive razor. It was a learning process using a 2 inch handle, but gave a decent shave. Definitely a three pass razor. But it will be great to take the next time for travel. Will save a lot of room.

Yup, very gentle razor capable of very good shaves.

C'mon, Man! "A lot of room"? You're saving millimeters and milligrams by traveling with that razor opposed to a full size razor. Do you really need the extra space? Do you really need the extra weight?

Take what's comfortable to shave with!

Actually it's a little more than that. If I go with my old kit, it's an extra ditty bag with a razor, my small mug, brush, & blades. I do not carry an extra comb, just the one in my back pocket. I also don't use standard deodorant in a can, I use a crystal deodorant stick that is just under 2 oz. It's basically alum cornstarch & mineral salts. I can take this kit with a piece of Arko shaving stick inside, my deodorant stick and travel toothbrush held on the kit with a ranger strap and it will all fit in one of the pockets of my small backpack. When I travel by myself or camping for three or four days, I travel light. I don't carry luggage. I carry a small back pack, and possibly a flight bag. If I'm camping by myself, I'm usually taking my Kayak, so I have everything set up that my rods, gear, and supplies all fit in my Kayak, and gear crate on the yak. So yeah, saving as much space does help. But that's just me. I was in field support units in the military, we learned to travel light.

Hey Tom. Merkur (a German company) makes a travel razor that takes the double edge blades like the Gillette razors shown.
I have one. Breaks down into four small parts. Gives a great shave. Should be pretty easy for you to find one.
