All About Pocket Knives

Hello All,

I've had his George Wostenholm Sheffield IXL for a while now but really wanting to know more about it. Did some research but could not find this exact one to compare. Found some info on similar looking, but none with the same handle color. If anyone could help me with more information on year, value and history if possible, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I got no help for you tigertail, sorry but it is a wonderful old knife.

Just a SWAG but by looking at the handle material;pins;lock;and etch I would venture that it was made around 1900 or maybe slightly before.

The blade is pretty well worn so the knife likely had a lot of use. It was probably a lot darker when new but the handles tend to lighten as the heavier surface dye wears down through use and pocket wear. I have seen a few of these with handles that appeared to be lighter even when they've seen little use.

Here's a shot of a similar knife. The back covers are usually what they start out as as color wise. The front looks similar to yours.

Nice looking old knife! Some brands changed stampings occasionally so that is often one clue regarding the age of a knife. According to Goins’ Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings, Wostenholm used that same tang stamp that is on your knife from 1890-1971, so it’s not of much use in deterring age. There were some changes in stamps used on other areas of the knife, but I don’t see one that indicates the “I*XL” stamp on the blade was used in a specific time period.

Someone who collects Wostenholm knives may know more.

Amazing how a knife lead me to this amazing community. Some very helpful and kind responses. I can't thank you all enough for your help. I spend hours researching but could not find the exact one to reference with the same color handle. Didnt know the outter dye on the handle wears off over time. Truly amazing to own such an old unique piece.

I will say the older knives I own really feel more solid, well made and you can feel the passion for the craft was put into each knife. Going to do some digging in the Goins encyclopedia. If anyone has any idea on value of this knife please let me know. If you own this knife share some pics here please.
