All About Pocket Knives

Hello all. New member here. I've happened to acquire a knife that I am having trouble Identifying. The brand is not legible on the main blade. It is 3- 1/2" closed and 5- 7/8" open (main blade) If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it. Attached are some pics. Thanks in advance.

That's a Queen stamp on the tang. Beyond that, I have nothing.
Folks a lot smarter than I on such things will be right along!

I agree with Steve. It is a Queen, and looks like it could either be The Queen logo with "Steel" or it could be the Queen logo with "ueen spelling out queen. You could try rubbing with a pencil eraser and see if it becomes more clear, or if your careful, some 0000 steel wool and lightly buff the tang stamp and see if you can read it better.

Your Queen appears to be a # 47, called a Balloon Pattern. The pictures aren't quite clear enough but the tang stamp appears to be one used in the 1950's. Not sure about the handle material. It is most likely real Winterbottom Bone.

Queen, swell center. Nice little knife. Put some oil on the blades and joints, sharpen it up...it'll make a great user!

Just noticed Doc B used the name swell center, which does describe the shape of your knife. The name Balloon Pattern is from the old Queen catalogs. In addition to those two names the #47 it is also referred to as a Half Whittler in some of the Queen reference lists. There is a #48 which has the same frame but with an additional blade on the little end, that being a coping blade. That knife, the 48, is referred to as a Whittler and in the old catalogs as a Carpenter's knife.

Wow! You guys are great! A heap of information in no time at all. Made me feel very welcome also. I'm on another forum (a specific job sector) and you wouldn't believe how they treat new guys and each other. There are a lot of Type A personalities in that career field. I always liked the Queen winterbottom patterns...but never really had any. I picked this #48 up, last week. As treefarmer said...it's got the 3 blades. Mine is Delrin handled.

Knice pick up Doc. Will it have different handles before too long?

Ha! That guy is much better looking than me...and is just part of an ad...on an old coaster. I like the winterbottom...the main reason I got it...so it stays

I have a Queen knife that started out life the same as yours, though mine had been treated poorly before I bought it.
I reshaped the badly-worn blades, and replaced the broken bone handles.
Yours looks much nicer!

I don't know Reverand, that's a good looking knife. I'm just getting started in this knife thing and am eager to learn all I can. At least I know now that you guys are virtually encyclopedic with your knowledge of knives. Thank you guys.
