BF 2018 mod

I had a wild hair for awhile on this knife. It was decent as it originally was produced, but a little plain for my taste. I had some stag I was experimenting with dyeing on, so I used that. I also wanted to see what it would look like by having both blades at one end. Here's a before and after...

What dye did you use? It took well on the surfaces.

I have an old Anvil (Colonial) that is basically the same pattern as you built--A Jack in a Large Stockman frame. Pretty danged perfect if I do say so. Great job! SK Blades, last year, was planning on doing a knife that was similar to the BF knife, in the same CPM-154 stainless.

I used a combo of a few different RIT dyes. I simmer the material for 2-3 hrs twice. Then I brush on a solution of gas and ATF (can't recall the parts per off hand). I let the materials set for a couple weeks before using.

Not my recipe, I can't take credit for it. I don't know if it's "the" way to do it, but seems pretty out there to be wrong. I did read it somewhere on a forum, so it must be true, LOL.

After you mentioned gas.... I got to thinking... maybe mineral spirits (??).....
I have a batch of "Ed's Red" I use for de-rusting and cleaning gun parts..... I might have to drop a piece of horn in it, along with a little Rit and see what happens.....
I had a friend that used to take powder horns we scrimshawed and drop them into a hot water bath so he could "antique" them for us. His recipe was just Rit dye in hot water..... not boiling water but hot water. He had an old stand alone stove eye and a big pot he set on it with the goodies in it.
The thing about powder horns was, they were thin and became soft like plastic when they stayed in the hot water for a long time. It was mostly, in the bath...... watch it draw color..... then get it out.
Sounds like bone will have to sit longer to take color.

Did the original knife have two springs or did you have to add a spring when you put both blades on the same end?

That's interesting about the powder horns.
"gas" is gasoline. Don't light up while you're doing this portion of the process, LOL. I stick those pieces out in the shed to cure, so they don't stink up the shop or the house.

Yes, two springs that were side-by-side, but opposite each other. When they are on the same side, there is friction between the 2 blades, as there is no liner between them. In retrospect, I wish I had made one...

Absolutely spectacular Glenn!
I have used oil, alcohol and dyes before but but never gasoline and ATF. The results to speak for themselves!
Outstanding innovation and quite handsome also!

Thanks! I would have never come up with that on my own, and the jury is out on the total effectiveness, but it does produce interesting results.
I just did another batch of stag, and some soup bone...
