So....what'd ya' think of this?

I don't mean to be overly critical of some's work, but this looks like a good example of how NOT do to custom work on a very nice knife.

I'm certainly not qualified to be much of a critic on knives, but at least if it were me doing the work, I would have AT LEAST placed the mosaic pins in vertical/horizontal alignment with each other. And, the shield is horribly proud of the scales. I can see why he wants to sell it. He probably spent a fair sum for the mammoth ivory, it cracked on him and he's lost interest in it and just wants to get shed of it.

What's the general concensus here....or am I just being too pickey? ::shrug::

It's gonna' be interesting to see how much it brings.

i saw this knife earlier. the shield was a real turn off, as of course was the crack.I think the handles look alright as does the blade, and could live with the pins i think, but why not have them symetrical. ::shrug::it may be that if the shield was placed better, the pins would look straighter. the shield looks way off to me.

So....if no one else bid on it, and a guy could get it for say....around $50.00 or so, it might be a good one for a novice to try and do some re-hafting on with some gnarly elk antler, eh? ::shrug:: What would kinda' scare me though....after seeing what the outside looks like, who knows what it looks like under the "aftermarket" scales? Especially with the specific note: Sold AS IS, NO REFUNDS. That always tends to make me shy away from anything, 'cept for wimens!   ::dang:: ::mdm:: ::doh::

This is why you should want to try and "dry fit" everything BEFORE you glue everything together. Those scales are most likely from fine_turnage_productions on eBay since I see him bidding on these items often. So, he did not spend that much.

ALSO, he should use another name when buying his supplies. Take a look at this knife for instance, that is selling for a bit over $250.00.

Now I ask, in this add do you see anything where comes out and says, "I purchased this knife and put filework and scales on it."

Well, IMO that is not quite honest, I'll show you what I mean.
Here is the purchased knife from PremiumKnifeSupply of eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Knife-Blanks-Blade- ... dZViewItem

The guy is Buying FULLY MADE folders and just putting a handle and filework on it. MADE in Seki City - JAPAN.

So, I can't feel sorry for a guy that allows his customers to think it's a hand made knife - NOT!

Read the feed backs, I KNOW what he's doing! Not bad for 2-3 hours work, if that. ::td:: ::td::

READ THE KNIFE!! By golly they're the same! ::huff::

BTW, look at the shield, not enough skill or confidence, IMO to inlay it, just slop it on with SUPERGLUE!

Why does he use mamoth tusk or tooth? Because it brings a PREMIUM PRICE! YES, I've had my eye on this guy and I wouldn't buy ANYTHING FROM HIM, just my opinion you know!

NONE TAKEN, I figured he would show up here sooner or later.  I see that he buys blades from snakeriverknives on eBay also. Well, I've had Grand Leavitt help me with projects and he is a classy guy. Just wrong to take credit for something he didn't do!

I don't know. When a guy gives the location of the knife as off the workbench on eBay, doen't come out and says it is a purchased blade, why should he get any sympathy. He's getting the same prices in some cases as guys who grind their own blades. Ommitting that big thing is the same as lying. He did not etch his name on the knife which you should never do on a purchased blade going out for sale, so he's OK there. Thes sheaths he uses on some knives, I've seen before, CHEAPO 4 OZ. $8.95 leather. ::barf:: The blades are massed produced on a CNC machine and sold on eBay and possibly Jantz or Texas knifemakers.
From a knifemakers stand point he is just rehandling - NO BLADE SMITHING AT ALL. Bladesmithing is what it's all about.

Yes, I used purchased blades to learn, BUT, I NEVER SOLD ONE. I did give them away with my first hand made sheaths to youngsters around the neighborhood with parents permission. I am grinding my blades, the giveaways produced a huge amount of orders starting with my brothers hunting partners. HONESTY PAYS.

In a nutshell, he's not making knives, just handling them.

not everybody can afford all the machinery required to forge, grind, polish from scratch. i'm not sure how to take y'all's comments. i don't make knives either. i do use some ready made blanks. i embellish. re-handle. i am not offended by any of y'all's remarks. though, they make me think twice about showing one of the pos i have worked on.

i read his ads and i don't see any thing amiss. he says it's a seki blade. i don't see where claims to have made the knife. i'll go back and read again. ::shrug::

I know of knifemakers who make a knife using just files and it does take a long time.

Seki blade, you and I know what that is, NOT everyone does. He neither claims to make the knife nor purchase it.

I get my position from a knifemakers forum where I do get a lot of ideas for making knives. There are makers there from Brazil who use files and some who have grinders. Some use CNC, some frown on it and others accept it afterall, they did have to design the blade and then program the CNC. Some or most have forges others like myself do stock removal.

There are very few things set in concrete, don't purchase a blade and etch your name on it, BUT this is a site for Bladesmith's, those who make a blade from scratch or they make their own Damascus. I sure can't afford to do it all.

There are certainly other opinions and ideas as far as knifemaking goes. I have adopted the ideas put forth in that forum as far as knifemaking/Bladesmithing goes.

To each his own.

Wow guys....I didn't mean for this post to get so out of hand. I was only pointing out what I considered some very poor workmanship. I'm in no way a "bladesmith", so I'll just let it go at that.

I was under the assumption that opinions, unless unnecessarily mean spirited, were welcome. Seems as if I was wrong.

Trust me....it won't happen again. ::huff::

Yeah, where we discuss such issues as making/not making your own blades and other forums, appropriate, IMO. If you can't make the blade, it can't be called handmade! ::yawn:: ::yawn::
