All About Pocket Knives

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a Case Bowtie/Fishtail that I rescued. You might remember the picture of when I received it, together with a 6228PU "teardrop" or "torpedo " jack that came along with it. I just finished up on the 6228PU and below are pics of the before and after results. The scales are Culpepper's "catalina amber". I sourced the big bowtie shield from a friend of AAPK member "just bob", who has some Case parts. Bob, thanks again! My shield inlaying is still far from perfect, and I'm still trying to figure out how to get the liners back to perfectly flat before reassembling (as you can see in the picture of the back) but I'm OK with the overall result on this one. This is my first time even seeing a 6228PU in person, so I am pretty happy adding it to my collection. And, this old girl still has amazingly good snap in both blades. Happy Holidays everyone!

Great work, Herb! Now that jigging is what I would call classic banana bone, probably picked up the term from Sargent or some other reference book (maybe from Frosty now that I think about it). I love the finished product, great resurrection of a knife with some life left in it.

Question: when you speak of flattening the liners, what do you mean, were they bent or are you removing the krink at the mouth of the blade pocket?

That turned out great! I like the bone color and jigging, it goes well with that knife. Nice save.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Dale, when I look at the back of the knife I see those spaces or small gaps between the liners and the sides of the springs that aren't supposed to be there. I don't think they were there when the knives came out of the factory, so I am assuming the soft brass liners got bent somehow when the original scales disappeared or perhaps when I was disassembling the knife. I try to be very careful, but even with drilling out the center of the pins, a little bit of force, or prying is needed to get everything disassembled. Before reassembling, I examine the liners on a flat surface, and if I see any curves (not the "krink"), I try to bend them back, but those darn gaps show up when I put everything back together. So, what I am saying is I would like to get rid of those gaps that I frequently wind up with. Your sage advice would be greatly appreciated, as always!
