All About Pocket Knives

This is really strange - received a beautiful 2014 Case backpocket trapper (TB61546) from a collector (not factory) and the knife was never sharpened at the factory - no signs of any kind of abrasive ever touching the leading edge.

Could this be something that is done for salesman's samples or other "special" company applications ? I like the knife & I'll have it all Lansky'd up tonight ... just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this, and why Case would ever release a knife without an edge. Just curious more than anything else ... thx !

I can't give you a CASE specific answer per se.....But in my experience the last few years having a knife with little or NO sharpening or non existent bevels, or event bevel on one side but none on the other, or two good bevels that never meet in a sharp edge is becoming all too common. The worst offender in recent years from my experience was Queen, But a few CASE knives that I've seen haven't been immune from it either.

I would suspect this is just an example of the ever lessening quality control in our society and one just got through. that's my two ¢ anyway....

The way in which the Case factory is set up, for obvious safety reasons sharpening is one of the very last steps in the manufacturing process. After hafting and polishing, knives arrive at the sharpening operation in “incoming” trays, where they are removed one at a time, hand sharpened and placed in “outgoing” trays. The only operation after sharpening is inspection and packaging, where a mistake like that should have been caught. I’m guessing a sharpening operator somehow moved it from a tray of unsharpened knives to the tray of sharpened knives but didn’t sharpen it. The final inspection/cleaning/packaging operators should have caught it. Apparently it “escaped”.

I've heard of this happening a few times. It's not common, but it's not unheard of either.

I agree that it must be a factory mistake, a step was missed on the way out the door.

Thx guys for the logical reasons for this one likely slipping through QC. It’s a nice handful of a knife - single blade makes it fairly light for its size, nice half stop & the “deep canyon” jigging has a really nice feel to it.

One other thing - I know you're more than capable of sharpening it yourself, but if you'd like a "factory edge" on it contact Case. I'm sure they'll sharpen it for you at no cost!

Thanks for the intel Ken ... good to know that Case would do that. I just put an edge on it & I really like this knife - I think this one will make for a nice weekend carry & expect will help out with some fish cleaning next spring
