All About Pocket Knives

I lost my Ellenville New York Schrade Trapper So am now looking for a US made trapper to replace it. So far I found a Bear and Son Carbon Series for $65.00. Not sure about the quality since I have never seen one other then ad's. Also considering just getting a Buck Trapper. Think they are still made in US. Any info you all have would be appreciated.

Some options for finding a made in U,S.A. Trapper would be Case (they make trappers in both carbon steel (CV) and stainless, and with a multitude of handle materials, with prices starting under $45 http://www.casexx.com/Pattern/DisplayPa ... nAutoID=60.

You might find an honest old Ellenville Schrade on eBay.

I can’t comment on the Bear trapper as I’ve never had one. I’ve heard both good and bad reviews. The Buck should be a good knife but look closely for where it’s made. They make some in the U.S. but some aren’t.

I’ve had Bear trappers and I was impressed. With Bear the quality is hit and miss but if you get a good one it’s a good one and works and wears well.

To Buck's credit the blister packs their Chinese made knives come in are marked made in China. They are also marked as having softer Stainless steel blades. The packaging of the knives they make themselves are marked made in USA and most are marked as being made with their harder 420HC stainless. The other clue is knives Buck made themselves have had a date code on the tang since 1986. Foreign made and contracted Bucks do not have the date code. I've never seen a Buck Trapper that was not stainless steel so if you do not want stainless look at other brands.

Case's least expensive yellow Delrin handled carbon steel Trapper is in all the smaller local hardware stores. It is the most popular of Case's knives in my area. They make stainless Trappers with a great number of handle colors and materials but only a few variations with carbon steel blades.

With some small risk of being screwed tons of trappers from various makers are sold through eBay. December into early January are a buyers market for products that are usually bought by men for themselves. That includes eBay knives. Some years after Christmas sales in the big box stores include knives at a big discount.

Some of the problems with the quality of Bear & Son knives was discussed here, as well as pictures of 2 of mine that have issues.

If you want another schrade there are pretty much always a lot of usa ones on ebay. What model exactly are you looking for?

This is all you need to know. Do NOT buy a Bear & Son or Communist Chinese knife.

Happy day! I found my Schrade Trapper. I had knee replacement on Oct 14. and could not drive for a couple of weeks. Was going to P-T twice a week and wore my sleep pants while there. My wife drove me. I must have put it in those floppy pants pocket. Well, while cleaning my car today I noticed a shiney piece of metal hiding behind the passenger side seat belt floor attachment and it was my Elenville N.Y. Schrade Trapper. I want to thank all of the folks replys for various replacements.

Glad to read this, it's like Christmas came early I bet. Being reunited with a lost friend . . . priceless!

Wonderful news! I’m so glad you found it.

If you ever do need a replacement though it’s hard to beat a plain ol yaller handled CASE with CV blades. They won’t break the bank and are tough as nails.

It is an especially happy day when a lost knife is found - and double that when it is NOT found in the clothes washer!
