Good morning knife fools... just purchased this knife and wondered if any of you could tell me what the” for flesh only” means on this knife?? First post here..looking forward to knowing y’all..

Several companies used to mark the spey blade that way. You’ll still hear some in these parts call it a flesh blade. The primary purpose of the blade was castrating the farm critters. Although the shape and grind of the blades make them real useful for any delicate cutting that needs to be done. Most of the time the farmers who used that blade for castrating didn’t use it for anything else so as to not damage the blade. Hence the for flesh only marking, not a command or warning, but imo a marketing thing.

Very nice knife for you first post. It looks like a Case XX USA 64047P with red bone handles. The blade you are asking about is called a Spey blade. If you do an internet search for "spey blade" it corroborates what Colonel26 told you. Spey blades are found on a number of patterns from a number of manufacturers. On a trapper pattern, for example, the spey blade is as long as the knife frame instead of shorter as on your stockman pattern.

Very nice! The 047 is my favorite Case pattern for carrying. I used to carry a 64047 just like yours, but quit carrying it when the values started escalating after Case discontinued it (1978 was the last year they made them I think). So now I carry a 53047 or a 63047 - same knife but no punch.

As others have said, “For Flesh Only” was marked on the spey blade of many stockman patterns, by Case and others.

Interesting. If you have one like that I’d be interested in seeing it. I don’t recall seeing a knife having mixed carbon and stainless blades.

That 64047PU in the OP has carbon (CV) blades. Do a quick search here on AAPK - just search for “flesh”. You’ll find Case, Catt, Camillus, Robeson, and a bunch more with the “For Flesh Only” etch, all on carbon blades. Unfortunately by the time stainless steel came into vogue, “For Flesh Only” was on its way out.

Welllll, I may just have one of these. I picked up a 6318 CV thru an online auction with some other Case knives. My thought was the "SS" spey blade was a replacement blade. I've been using it as my EDC due to that thought. Apparently the spey blade may be original (?). I do not see any sign of "for flesh only" though.

My apologizes for the photo quality. The knife is better than the photos represent. The spey blade is actually shiny on both sides, no tarnish or rust. Photo quality may be due to how I got them off my iPhone to the computer (emailed). The "SS" is stamped on the spey blade, but you can barely make it out in the photo.

Here it is.....a 2002 "6318 CV" with a "SS" spey blade:

Can’t tell much from your pictures so I’ll take your word for it. My guess is it’s a factory error. I suppose it’s possible it could be a replacement blade but I doubt it given the condition of the knife.

By the time when that one was made the For Flesh Only etch was a distant memory. As for a knife being made intentionally with mixed SS and carbon blades, I can’t think of any reason for doing so. Maybe some others can.
