All About Pocket Knives

Here's a shot of the EDC drawer I stand over every morning when I'm running late, trying to decide what to carry to work...

The Kiwi, on it's merits is probably the best small folder I have. Amazing ergos, great steel (VG 10), silky smooth action, tight tolerances, very sturdy construction, beautiful materials and finish, and all in a very small package.

It was this knife that proved to me that I'm really a sucker for the old style slipjoints. With all it has going for it, it doesn't see nearly as much pocket time as my Case CV medium stockman.

That being said, I recommend it in the highest terms. It's an amazing little knife. The most amazing thing is how much it fills your hand in the open position, due to the finger choil. It's less than three inches closed, but feels like a 3 3/4 inch handle in the open position.

The big red bone sowbelly stockman is a...(drum roll please)...Chinese made Boker Magnum. HOWEVER...it happens to be one of my favorite EDC's. I don't know if I just got a good one, but the fit and finish are better than my Case CV large stockman, also pictured. Springs are strong but not stiff. Blades seat beautifully in the open position. Everything about it is great. The blade steel is supposedly 440A. Whatever it is, they take and hold a great edge, at least as good as my Case knives in 420HC. And I bought it for $15 on ebay.

The equal end knife with the dark handles is a Shapleigh Punch Blade Cattle Knife buffalo horn. I have two -- one is a drawer queen, and this one in the picture is for carry. These are made in the Olbertz factory in Solingen and distributed by James Parker. Supposedly they are made from 50 year old knife parts discovered in the old Shapleiph Hardware factory or something like that. Personally I think that's mostly hype, but it's a really nice knife. The punch looks really old school so maybe that's the part that's old. Who knows.
