All About Pocket Knives

When inlaying Shields what’s the concensus (if there is one) on how deep the shield should be inlayed? I’ve seen some factory shields that are installed above the bone or acrylic and I’ve seen some that are flush with the handle material. Is there a standard or is it based on the type of handle material?

I think that’s kind of the $64,000 question Jeff!

For me there are a lot of variables involved:
1 – How thick is the shield? Some of the old shields were very thin and some of the newer ones are very thick, Case knives are a good example. Compare a 1940s or 1950s Case shield to a 2016 Case shield. The newer ones are several times thicker.
2 – The handle material itself often determines how deeply I inlay the shield. In a really deep jigging pattern or in really rough stag I may only need to knock down the higher ridges to get the shield securely in place where it’s not likely to be popped out.
3 – I try to let my eye be the guide. If you look at thousands of knives you will probably find a certain way of inlaying the shield is more aesthetically pleasing to you than another methods. This is very subjective, in the final analysis I think it’s up to the individual.

I personally do not find Case knives with the thick shields appealing, so I would try to bury it in the handle as close as possible to being flush with the surface of the handle, unless of course it has a really rough jigging pattern or stag. But that is me your mileage may vary.

Mostly I think whatever makes you happy is the best guide.

Me, I don't like to rub my finger across the shield and feel an edge. I just think this situation is more conducive to a shield getting knocked out and lost.
I want it to stay in!

Flush with scale is always nice, especially on wood and smooth bone. It looks more finished and shows attention to detail. But I own two deer stag knives where the shield is sunken in a little and I find them to be perfect. I like the extra traction provided by the edge and at least I know there is less cause for it to ever displace itself. A shield that sits high is a no for me.
