Thanks everyone! She is 17 years old and bitten in the backyard by a copperhead. I rushed her to my vet, and after 2 injections, and 1 week of oral meds she is doing excellent. Never would know she has had a close call. I wish I could afford a higher end gift but that seems like the perfect gift for a vet !!!!
PS. I also hope she learned to leave snakes alone!!!!

Coming from a member of the knife community, that is the perfect gift. I'm not much on pets but I am glad your pooch survived.

Oscar, what kind of food do you feed your girl? Even the brand name if you don't mind and have long used a particular brand. Thanks.

Quick Steel: I sent email with info you requested about the brand dog food I use. Let me know if you got it. If not I will resend. She is old dog and she runs and plays with my young dog. She was strong enough to survive snakebite in her face. She has one tooth left from bad teeth but otherwise in great condition. I can’t say it’s due to her diet but I do believe it is a factor. My pets and others I know do great with it and it’s reasonable in price.
Also, if your dog has food allergy, feed 4health potato and salmon exclusively. Allergy will clear up in 2 weeks.
4health brand exclusive to tractor supply company. My vet recommended it years ago and my pets thrive on it.

"oscar" really glad your loyal friend made it. Do not want to be morbid or get off topic, but thought you may be interested in this statistic. The biggest cause of dog death[apart from old age] over here is snake bite. So your really lucky that you have a good vet that you could get to in time.

Thanks Cudgee. It’s a problem here. I live in the Deep South. I’m glad it wasn’t a Eastern Diamondback or Cotton Mouth. And still I’m very lucky to have a terrific vet.

Fantastic outcome and a great gift. We have a young vet at church whose also a pocket knife guy. He’s love that. I’m sure yours will too.

Oscar - You inspired me and today I paid it forward. You see, my absence from AAPK in the last few months has largely been due to the fact that my wife and I are nursing our 14-year old border collie back to health after a severe bout with pancreatitis where we almost lost her. This past weekend she turned the corner for the good and both her disposition and outlook are brighter at the moment. We feel as though her vet helped her to cheat death after he took a leap-of-faith regarding aggressive steroid treatments. Today I presented him with an heirloom pocket knife from my personal collection. A staff member took a picture with all of us that I will share here once it's available. He said with tears in his eyes that in 38 years of private practice, it's the first time that somebody actually gave him something he could cherish for the rest of his life - I'm glad I was inspired by your act of kindness.

Lilly is a beautiful girl. It’s also a beautiful knife.
I sometimes have people ask me why I didn’t become a Vet instead of simply working at a zoo.
Vets and their assistants do a job that I never could. They deal with all the sad and bad parts of an animals life. They have to look the humans in the eye and break their hearts. Yes, they have as many successes, like Lilly, but they also get the heartbreak.
That’s besides the fact that they put in years of school to learn how to diagnose and treat their patients and on top of that, maintain their own hospitals.
They deserve every pat on the back we can give ‘em!
Your knife is perfect. It’s useful and beautiful. You made the effort to find it and buy it.

Bestgear: I am very glad that your baby pulled through ! It’s amazing how wonderful our pets are and how much they mean to us. It’s tragic when the inevitable comes. When we’re young, we outlive them. When we’re old, they outlive us. I wish that they could be bred to have a much longer life span rather than some physical trait that makes no difference to them, just human ideas of how they should look.
Pancreatitis is a serious condition which many dogs are prone to. Probably genetics plays a big part. I have heard that one of the triggers for it can be certain human foods. The greatest offender is fats. It’s best to forego people food and stick to a quality dog food with low fat content. Ask your vet’s recommendation.

Zoogirl: Thanks for your kind words, and the compliment for Lilly. I understand fully what you say. I could never be a vet. Although they do tremendous good, there is also a lot of sadness to deal with. I worked in the medical field for a long time. I learned not to care one iota for patients. Not being callous. The best way I could help them and do the best job possible was to distance myself. There is no way I could do that with dogs or cats.
My oldest dog, Lilly, has had 4 dental procedures and is left with one tooth. Otherwise, she’s in great shape for her advanced age. I am very grateful for my vet giving her more time. She was bitten in the face, severely swollen and I thought I was going to lose her. God bless all good vets for what they do.
