All About Pocket Knives

I purchased this knife from one of the AAPK member stores awhile ago; It was in pretty good shape with some minor blade pitting and carbon markings.I decided to go with some new amber colored american standard jigged bone handles.I disassembled the knife and layed the bone slabs on the handles to see if the fit was close. The color always looks so drab before the bone is finished; I squared up the ends of the bone on my 4'x36" belt/disc sander and sanded the back side of the slabs so they were flat; Here they are rough sanded to fit the handles; And here they are with the initial polishing done; I had to cut a steel pin from a nail and get it to the correct size by chucking it up in my drill press and filing it (thanks Bill D. for the tip). I also had a chance to try using a small spray of WD40 on my parts while polishing and it really helps the compound do its work (again, thanks Bill D. for the tip).
All that was left to do was assemble the parts and peen the pins.
Here's the finished knife; The pictures show it a little bit lighter than it is in actual light. Its a little bit browner in person.

Yes OC, all of my bone comes from Culpepper. Ive had pretty good luck with them so far and I haven’t run across many other vendors selling jigged bone slabs.

Great job Jeff! I like when everyone posts these step by step threads. I learn a little more each time I read one. Great job of bringing out the color of the scales. Next time I do one, I am going to take a little more time in the prep stage. I am glad you showed the sanding process for getting the scales to size and thickness.

She is a beauty! AND... I agree... MUCH better than a new one!

Nice work Jeff!
The amber color is always a good-looking color to my eye and the larger jigging pattern shows up well and is to scale with the larger knife. A small jigging pattern just looks weird to me on a large knife. Small jigging gets lost on the large pallet whereas the large jigging shows up quite nicely on the Granddaddy Barlow!
