All About Pocket Knives

I currently have 6 or 8 hammers but usually fall back to one or two that work well and just feel right in my hand.
When you guys are peening pins what’s your favorite hammer? Is it a regular ball peen hammer or a cross peen hammer or?
It seems like I’m always on the lookout for another hammer (kind of like the pro golfers that buy a new putter for each tournament).
Just curious about what you’re using.

I have some small hammers and a favorite, although I am not a knife mechanic I do peen occasionally.

I use a 2 oz. cross peen hammer, but seldom use the cross peen head.
I do almost all of my riveting with the flat head.

Here's some of my hammers.
The two longer hammers on top are a Japanese hammer and below that is one I hung a handle on.
The handle is Tiger Maple and of a length and shape I enjoy.

I have many hammers, but only use a couple regularly...Here's one of my favorites.
I also have a 4oz ball pein that I use for many tasks.

I was watching Japanese tradesmen in Youtube and was impressed with their hammers and I bought this one on Ebay from Japan.

I have a small craftsman and a handmade plastic handled with a brass top that if kept buffed keeps the pins shiney.

The Japanese hammer has a flat and rounded face.

The only one I have is this TC504 Vaughan 4 oz. that I picked up at the fleamarket a few years back.

That Japanese hammer is the bomb!

Not very sexy, but this is an antique 4-1/2" long cross-peen hammer (I don't know the weight). It was pretty rough, but after I smoothed the ends, it works well.

The top hammer is my current favorite for handle pins. At 7.5 ounces it seem like just the right weight.
The center two hammers were just recently acquired and the large hammer at the bottom is what I use for most of my pivot pins.

These are my favorite peening hammers.
The small ball peen is actually made by Heller, you can see part of their stamp and logo on the side of the head.
Heller is known for their quality Farrier supplies.
I use this small hammer for handle pins when I'm installing thin bone handles or I use it to mushroom the rivet on the inside of the liner.

The cross peen hammer I use for most of my peening jobs, although I will go to a 4 ounce Craftsman ball peen hammer if I am installing 1/8" brass pins.
With the handle included, the Craftsman actually weighs 7.1 oz.


I did get some rivet hammers in today, they are for sale in my AAPK store.
There are two styles of rivet hammers and a small 2 ounce brass mallet, if anyone needs a that hammer.
