All About Pocket Knives

Hey Camillus folks!
Y'all wanted to see what my Camillus #15 would look like with new clothes on....... so here she is.....

Just before I started taking it apart....... When I started cleaning up the parts, I decided to leave the patina on the blades......
Why?..... Well, I don't know...... just seemed like the thing to do at the time.

With her new Culpepper smooth red bone scales..... Thanks for everyone's help during the "show me one" phase.....

That is a vast improvement Mike! It looks good!
Did you have to replace the liners?

I actually cleaned up the liners. They are brass and just had a load of gunk stuck to 'em. That was some nasty stuff..... oily, dirty cell residue is bad, but I did get it off.

Wow you were really fortunate that the liners weren't cracked at the rocker pen. I have seen that happen a lot of times on the old celluloid Camillus knives. The Streamlines are famous for that!
I have taken Streamlines apart that seem to work well and had ok snap, only to find that there were cracks at both liners, and as soon as I took the handles apart you could almost watch the liners twst and crack further from the stress put on the rocker pins by the springs.
The surprising thing was that the knife from the outside didn't appear to be too involved in the outgassing process. Not nearly as bad as yours looked. It's really difficult to tell what damage has been done to a knife without taking it apart.

You made a great rescue of that #15!

You know what.... I noticed all 4 of the bolsters had cracks. SO...... recon that came from the cell gassing. Well, dog gone it.....celluloid IS a REAL killer.

After I found out most of the other #15s went to that great cuttler's bench in the sky, I just had to try to give this one a new lease on life. It sho' does tote good!

Yes! And I do not understand why many manufacturers (including Camillus ) used celluloid even in the 90s - 2000s, although they certainly knew about its properties.

Mike do you still have this old knife ? They’re rather hard to find . You sure saved a great piece from being destroyed .

Great job. The handles complement the knife. You really brought that one back to life! What a great EDC that would make.
