Dang! My learning curve is a 90 degree angle!

I bought several Loveless fasteners from Texas Knife Makers Supply a while back and finally got around to trying them out a couple of days ago. The knife in question was a bowie configuration with some really nice curly maple scales. The loveless fasteners were standing very proud of the scales, so I began grinding them down flush with the maple, only to discover than in very short order, the wood began to smoke and then I noticed the fasteners were glowing red! Duh! 
What a dumb a$$. A little common sense and some forethought would have told me to use the little cutting wheel on my Dremel tool to cut them off close to the wood and use a file to work them down the rest of the way. But Nooooooo! 
It seems as nothing ever comes easy for me. But, I guess the redeaming thing about it all is, I seldom make the same mistake twice.
So....today, I have my work cut out for me....or maybe I should say burnt out for me.
