New member needs help

Post by michaelspayth »

Been visiting this site for quite some time now but finally got around to joining! Needing some help identifying a knife. My research has been coming up short. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Welcome to AAPK! I don't have your answer...but I "feel your pain" in researching that. Every variation of searches with black and knives....brings up the billion black knives that exist in the world! I wonder if it's custom. Hopefully someone can come along and shed some light on it.

Per Goins’ Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings:
BLACK c 1929. A large “B” is stamped on the bolster of a Barlow knife. These knives were sold by the Supplee Hardware Company.

That's great! Thanks! Had begun to fear that it was a homemade deal. Excited to start joining in with discussions and to start getting some feedback on what I've been able to collect so far. Admire what you guys do here at AAPK.

No doubt the information given here and in Goins is correct. I had never heard of Supplee Hardware and wanted to look it up and see where it was from. Scads of logos and brands and even some knife boxes, but no mention of the Black Barlow or any knife with that brand name. What do you suppose it was a knife they contracted out in small quantity?
