All About Pocket Knives

The missing shields in these Boker's bothered me until last week when I found a smashed sterling silver ring in a parking lot.

I used a 5.56 cartridge head to trace a circle in the material then cut it out with tin snips. I filed them round and put a drop of epoxy in the hole and tapped them in with a plastic mallet.

My Boker's are happy!

Cool solution to missing shields, Byrd. I think that Bokers are the worst about shedding shields. It has happened to me, but I was fortunate enough to recover the missing shield in my trouser pocket. Those shields you made even preserve the tree motif. I can imagine someone several decades from now trying to figure out when Boker used those!

Those look pretty good! Someone ought to start putting those on a new production model!

I was pretty happy with how they turned out. After I shaped them I realized how they would fit the Tree Brand motif. Maybe Boker will pay me royalties for upgrading their shield design?

SO, how did you get that texture? That actually looks "Tree-like" for Tree Brand... so it fits the knife brand perfectly!

Was that already ON the ring?

I have some Bokers that need a shield. I have seen folks use a spent .223 cartridge base in the hole.....
(I just like your idea a LOT better)

I just got lucky. That was the pattern of the ring. It was a pretty large ring as I can probably get a couple more shields from it. There were no maker's mark inside so who knows who made it. Probably just costume jewelry. I bet if you looked at yard sales and those teenagers jewelry stores in malls you could find something similar.

COOL..... GREAT idea... I will be on the look-out for something like yours. They have a LOT of sterling rings down at the antique / junk store near my house. I will have to check with them!

a friend and knife dealer at local flea market has a baggie 3/4 of an inch deep with original large and small boker shields-has to be well over a hundred-he will give me what I need....when I ask him where he got them-he smiles and says nothing-he is well connected with smkw for many years...his boy owns ohio knives...knows stewart taylor we live not far from mr. taylor and smokey knives....he might have gotten them from smkw and been told not to say where they came from...

I wish I'd have known that! I reached out to Boker by phone and email with no response so I fabricated these. No harm, I'm happy with them.

It's a creative and very good-looking alternative to a Boker shield.

Byrd, those shields are awesome! Much better than the originals. I have often wondered why I have owned and seen so many Bokers with missing shields. I have been searching for a replacement 9mm shield for a Boker trapper for a few months now, and based on a recent post I saw, called Boker. Maybe I was lucky, but the lady who answered couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. Three days later a new shield arrived at my house, for free! I did ask her why I have had and seen so many Boker knives with missing shields and she didn't mince words - because of the epoxy they use with no pins. She told me to use super glue gel and even included installation instructions with the new shield. I wish that all customer service experiences were this pleasant. Best regards. Herb
