It must take a lot of determination to take on and complete what looks to be a difficult carving.
I would like to know if you started a few, 'wrecked' them and then started over ? "wrecked" = carved out wood that should have been left in place.
And, about how many hours from block of Basswood to what we see in picture ?
Did you use all 3 blades on the Seahorse whittler ? Did you re-sharpen part way through ?

I got lucky on the first try to make one. I thought I was going to break it a couple of times.
I had to resharpen once. I used the main blade on the seahorse. I have reprofiled the edge a little knocking the shoulder off to make it carve better.
It gets very delicate torwards completion. I didn't do all the carving to once but I have about 4hrs in it. I can probably cut the time in almost half now that I've learned a lot from making one. There was what seemed like a hard spot in this block that gave me fits that made it a challenge to not break it.

Great job Doug. I kinda enjoy doing the spirals as well but they can be fragile. You did a great job on that one. Congrats.

Nice job but way beyond my skill level! I marvel at people that carve things like that!
I'm happy if I can do a half way job carving up a prime rib, enough to get it in my mouth.

Thanks. Prime rib is some of the best things to carve!
I'm just a beginner learning as I go. I think you would be surprised at what you could do. Prime rib is good practice
