How do you storing assisted opening knife?

I have a number of assisted opening knives like Sog, Kershaw and Camillus. I fell it is wrong to store them with the blades closed do to the fact the springs are compressed. Then to store them with the blade open what do you do with the box and papers ?

Give me some of your ideas or what you do to preserve them in good condition.

I store all of mine in the open position.If you ask ten people their opinion,you'll likely get twelve answers .As an example;automotive springs both leaf and coil are in a constant state of compression or tension and it usually takes many years for them to deform.

Might not be a good comparison to knives though.I expect a quality knife to have a reasonably good spring whereas a cheaper one may not.I would always relax a coil type spring though.

In the final end;it all boils down to your personal preference.

With gun springs they say that it is not the compression that eventually weakens them--it is the number of cycles. so I don't think you would have any problem either way.

okbohn, You have a good point there.

I know garage door springs have a life span by the number they open and close. Well all know most garage doors stay closed most of the time.

I never looked a knife springs that way.

Any one else have thoughts on this ?

Not really.

The effect of keeping autoloader clips loaded has been an ongoing topic of discussion amongst gun people for a long time.

Your right rmfnla, I've heard so many sides to that question. Some say temp. has alot to do with it. Like keeping them loaded in real hot or cold temps. I was trained to never load a mag. completely full. Drill SGT. always said leave 2 rounds out. Hey, I wasn't there to disagree with a 6ft.6in, 265lb. man beater I done what every other brave cocky red blooded man would do, I looked him right dead in the eyes and said, SIR YES SIR!
