All About Pocket Knives

Thanks to everyone who helped me figure out just what I bought they other day. It arrived today and I took some photos. It's not new other that to me. Some know I'm brand spank new to collecting. Does anyone want to hazard a guess, please, as to its value and how it should be graded?

It looks like one of the blades has been used and sharpened and blade etch is partly worn off. But other than being a 'used' knife the condition looks very good.

I love that green color on that and the jigging is exceptional. I believe the acorn shield means that you have stainless blades on this and not 1095 carbon steel. Didn’t know if you were aware of that? That said it is a used knife and in good to excellent condition, it’s not mint and wouldn’t command the price of a new GEC knife. I would be hard pressed to give you a value, even some used GEC knives can bring some really good money. I would think that it would be worth 75% of a new knife. That’s where I would want to be in it and no more.

Thank you very much. I was not aware that of the SS blades, thanks. I'm in the knife for too much I'm sure. Do you know of a resource where a fella can find out the value of slip joints Mr Sharpnshinyknives? I've taken a beating the last month.

The resources mentioned on here the most are Goins and Levine. They have price guides but honestly the information they provide is just a guide, actual prices vary so much. My best advice is to look two places, one is Ebay at sold and completed auctions on the knives you have, I also check what they are listed for and from that you can get an average or at least a good idea of value. The other place I look is right here on AAPK. When you search the knives for sale on here by the sellers you can get a good idea of value. The search function in the stores allows you to look by brand and you can see what’s for sale currently and what has been sold. It gives me an idea of what others think the value of a knife is.

I doubt that you over paid for it unless you got into a bidding war on EBay. There are plenty of people who prefer stainless steel over carbon.

I hope someone who knows for sure will come along and let you know for sure. Stainless is magnetic just not as much as steel. I know this because I have a knife holder on my wall in the kitchen and it holds knives on it with two magnetic strips. All I have in my kitchen are stainless knives.
I only have one stainless GEC and it has that acorn shield on it. The seller in the post could easily have been mistaken about the blade material.
I operate on the assumption that it’s stainless if it has an acorn shield, and all the rest are 1095 carbon steel. I could be wrong also.

Acorn shield is usually stainless, but on early ones like ARs not always. Cyclops stamp is always stainless blade/s.
