All About Pocket Knives

A little bit of a stretch, but it does have a BLADE. This has been in my family forever. It started out as my grandfather's. Can't recall ever seeing anyone use it, but I'm sure that it was. Now I just have it out for display. My research says that picture #4 dates this from 1891-1904. The one picture (#5) that says STANLEY, just before that, it says PAT (over) 72488. It also has the letter B in two different locations. It could be broken down even more, but I don't want to mess with it. It has not been restored in any fashion. Click on the pictures to enlarge. That's a nice Stanley transitional hand plane. Transitioning from all wood to all metal.
If you wanted to take those last two screws out that retain the "frog", which the chip breaker and the plane iron fasten to, you would probably find a lot of debris that will hold moisture and create more rust.
The shoe and the knob and the tote (handle) would love some mineral oil.
If you do take it apart, may I suggest that you do not tighten any of the screws. Just turn them to snug.
This is plenty good for display. I would, of course, tighten them within reason to use it.
If the iron were sharp that old plane could sing again.
