All About Pocket Knives

Here is a quick and easy way to "replace" a missing shield. I wouldn't choose this for a knife with too much value...but it beats painstakingly fabricating a new shield and fitting it.
**** I'm pretty sure this is a Schrade import, of relatively recent manufacture. It has no country of origin marked on it and is only marked SCH17TY. I thought if something was imported...it had to be marked with country of origin. How did Schrade get by this?

Didn't take a lot more than 15 minutes total time. Painters taped to confine. Mixed a little black mica powder (you could use charcoal) in epoxy. I don't care what the box of "5 minute epoxy" says...wait overnight to sand it.

Great idea Doc B! Never would have thought of that. I've never used that stuff before, can you make it have any color you want?
And could you put something inside the hole like lets say for example a wooden matchstick, an ear ring or whatever and then
fill it with colourless clear epoxy and when it's hard then you could see whatever you put inside??? Just wondering.

The mica powders come in an assortment of colors...probably a little pricey, if you weren't going to use it much. I don't see why you couldn't use the clear epoxy, as you suggest.

Cool, then you could fill it like halfway, let it harden, then place a Tequila worm in there, then fill it all the way up and Bingo, you've got a "Tequila Knife"! SWEET!!!!!!!! Bet that would sell good on ebay if you can get a good Close-Up picture of the worm. I know, I'm strang.

Well thanks Doc but it started off as your idea, I just picked it up and ran with it. You could put all kinds of stuff in there with some clear epoxy I guess. Some snake skin, a northern pike fang-tooth maybe or whatever is small enough. A lock of hair from a loved one or from a loved pet. A baby tooth from your child. Then you could give them the knife much latter in life as a gift. Just run with the idea. An alligator tooth is probably too big. Ok enough brain storming. Gotta get to bed soon, it's almost 23:00.

Great job! I think Taylors lose their shield way too easily--my first new knife was a Taylor 12OT (one of the first Chinese Schrades they came out with; as it's marked 'First Production Run"); and I lost the shield within a week. Yet, seeing a Schrade USA model with a missing shield is incredibly rare; I think that if it's missing one in that case, then it never had one to start with.

I have two knives missing shields, an Ulster BSA and a Boker 8388. I was thinking pin or rim of a shell casing; but I might just try this instead--both knives are pretty beat up (were missing shields when I got them) and are users anyway.

I love the thought for an old EDC knife. I have a couple that I may try this on.

Something else that might look good in that slot would be crumpled up tin foil then cover that with a clear resin or epoxy.

There was a brand of tobacco pipes made in Italy called Camminetto (sp), and they used a round hole with crumpled tin foil in it covered over with a clear resin of some sort. It looked like a diamond inlaid in the stem of the pipe.

Oh, I was just commenting on the original post, and the simple technique used to replace the missing shield.

Thought of something else that would look great in some clear epoxy in there. A mini fishing swivel or even better, some bright colored flies like used for fly fishing. I don't know much about fly fishing but I know that some flies are really small and they are often awesome looking little pieces of art.

Great quick-fix! SCH17TY reminds me of a clever VA license plate describing a beater car or truck.

That's a great idea! I've got a couple Bokers that need shields that I think will get the epoxy cure!

Had something I thought I'd add to this topic. I have been accumulating some pins to decorate my next "Tee-Box-Showcase" viewtopic.php?f=2&t=62229 & I thought I'd post some pictures of them here just as an idea for replacement shields. They would probably only work on larger knives or you would need smaller pins. Anyways, here are a few pictures for whatever it's worth. I threw in 2 pictures with a small case trapper & an Imperial so you can get a better idea of the size of the pins. Like I said, it would probably only work for larger knives. It's just an idea. Oh, and they are laying on a nut because they still have the pins on the back of them. The Ford Thunderbird pin would probably work the best from the height & the Peterbilt pin looks the best but it's about 1.5 X the size of the case shield. The Jeep is also about 1.5 X the size of the Imperial shield. The pictures aren't very good, sorry but you get the idea.

Had that done to a Camillus 23 (big knife) for Tommy.
None of these are the epoxy thing. All are just pins or tie tacks. Come to think of it, all of these are Glenn's creations.

And Glenn did that on a knife he did for a relative.

Glenn also did a tie tack shield for me.

Great idea Doc. Looks like something that would be done by a ............. dentist!

Cool, so it does work well! That's the same type of Ford Thunderbird pin that I have. Thanks for posting Jerry! Now I know the idea was a good one. At least for larger handles.
