All About Pocket Knives

I picked up this Jaeger Bros. Marinett, Wis. knife at a local fleamarket a while back for $2. Very beat with one leg in the coffin, the spear blade was broken, and the clip blade was very heavily worn from use and sharpening as well as having the tip broken off. When I bought it I was thinking that I might use the frame for something. But "upon further review" I decided that because I did not have a Jaeger knife and in fact I had never seen one, that I would try to salvage something out of it. The bone is fairly nice, and I liked the 4 1/4" size, so I decided to make one new blade for it and reprofile the other broken one to keep the Jaeger name on it. The new spear blade was made from 1095 high carbon. This knife was most likely a moose pattern when new, as it would have had a spear and a clip blade running the full length of the handle from opposite ends, each on it's own spring. In fact it is very similar to a Wilbert Moose that I have from around 1910. It has a couple of small pieces of missing bone, but for the most part it is now a solid old knife. I may doctor the bone at a later date with Acraglas. Now it has taken it's place as an EDC in my pocket.

Great save of a wonderful old knife. From a junk box knife to one that most of us would be proud to have in our pocket. Saved the best parts and at the same time made it useful. Old Cutler or should it be Old Wizard? You sure worked magic on that one. Wow!

Nice blade replacement. Do you make notes on the inside relating to the date/work performed? I have been putting my initials and a date.

In a case like this where I have made a replacement blade, I use an electric engraver to make my mark on the backside of the tang.

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the Jaeger Moose. I was just taking a "stab" at what the original blade may have looked like. I figured that it more than likely was similar to a Wilbert Moose that I have from roughly the same time period, so I used that for the model. When I am making a replacement blade, I tend to make it as big as what I can fold into the handle. I had never seen a Jaeger knife before, does anyone collect them?

Terrific rescue job! I do love those long pull spear blades. I've never encountered a Jaeger before, but here is one currently for sale on the bay:
