All About Pocket Knives

Back in November of 2017 I purchased an Ulster Stockman that I was very proud of as I had few Ulsters and this was the only Stockman. Very importantly, it was pristine, minty, without blemish. [1st photo] Not long after, I lost it. Tore up the house and car to no avail. After days of searching, I accepted the loss. But today I recovered it. It has lost the beauty of its youth having carbon spots and even rust. But like the returning Prodigal, it is time to rejoice. It will be an excellent EDC as it has retained its tightness and snappiness.

Do tell QS. Where ever did you find it?

I actually just lost a small multitool day before yesterday. It's part of the reason I hate lightweight shorts. Small knives and tools typically just slide out of them like they've been greased. I have to actually use my clip-carry "tactical" knives. I'm going to put a pocket watch clip I rigged for a Swiss Army Knife on my smaller traditionals with bails and see how that goes. A Cub Scout should carry well. If I'd had that setup on the multitool, it would still be on hand. Because black tactical knives like the CRKT M-16 EDC I was also carrying just aren't "me".

QS I'm so glad you found it! I remember when you got that knife and lost it. Now you can ....

GS, it had somehow gone deep beneath the center of my driver's seat in the car. Impossible to see much less reach. Today, looking for another knife [found], I used an untwisted wire hanger to poke around under the seat. Had done that before, but this time I felt something and knocked it towards the center console. Eureka! The Ulster appeared.

Cody, you are so right about knives sliding out of shorts. Maybe the back pocket will work? Don't know...yet.

QS do you mean it was on the floor under the driver's seat ? or between the seat and the seat back ? If on the floor under the seat did you try looking under the seat with a flashlight and still not see it ?
My Jerry Halfrich "Small Woodsman" folder is in it's 8th year of being lost somewhere inside the house. I still believe i will one day happen upon it.

kj, It was about in the center beneath the seat. When first looking for it with flashlight my head was sideways on the floor; could only get one eyeball just a little under the seat from the rear. Could really see nothing. Fat head? Possibly.

Thanks QS. I use a flashlight to search the floor under the seats in my 4 Runner. Good to learn that this might not be enough to ensure nothing valuable is there.

Glad you found your knife intact QS. I had a horrible experience once in my wife's car. Had just bought a beautiful little John Watts pearl gent's knife and was coming home when it slid off the seat and down between the console and the seat.
When I got home I started looking for it but couldn't locate it. After several minutes of looking I slid the seat back to look underneath and heard this horrible crunching sound;sort of like when a piece of pearl gets jammed between two pieces of steel.Yup you guessed it;the knife had fallen into the seat track and slid where it couldn't be seen. Scratch one beautiful little knife!

k7k, That is heartbreaking just learning of your tragedy. What a loss. Concerning knives that is about the saddest story I've encountered.

Soooooooooooooo glad you found it Garry!! I know the angry amazed feeling of losing things....especially a knife.

Given the choice, I'd rather tear something up as to lose it. At least if I break it I KNOW what has happened. When I've lost something I always wonder and continually question myself. Not fun.

QS I'm very glad you recovered your knife even if it is a tad worse for wear.

I have lost, and then found, a few that had slipped out of a pants pocket into seats and stuffed chairs. Helpful hosts made the recoveries happen.

One was dropped by me when using it up in the rigging; it hit the wooden deck sheathing and bounced overboard. I watched it for a couple fathoms as it fluttered out of sight.

Also lost one forever when at an auction preview. I had been using it to cut strips of paper for book marks in my catalogue, preparatory to bidding. While juggling collector’s accoutrements, i.e., headlamp; jeweler’s loupe; battery-lighted magnifying glass, I stupidly left the knife on a table.
At lunch time, while digging in my pockets for money I noticed that the knife was missing, went back, retraced my steps, to no avail.

It bothered me that when contacted later to see if anyone had found and turned the knife over to the auction house office, there was zero interest in even getting back to me. Closure would have been appreciated.

It really was just stupid me, and nothing much when considering the broad sweep of human misery throughout history.

Oh, it was a waterfall celluloid handled, 3 7/8 -inch Camillus Moose, with slanted and grooved nickel-silver bolsters; clip blade with long pull and swedge; spear blade with long pull and swedge. A very useful and respectable knife.

At least it’s being used and maybe even loved.

stumpstalker, Watching a knife disappear into the depths has to suck. If you were sailing off the New England coast you at least had the consolation of some lovely topography.

Sad stories everyone, I am glad there are a few happy endings.

Several years ago now we were doing some remodeling in our kitchen. I went to Lowe's to buy some lumber. I was driving my 1998 Expedition and some of the lumber was too long to fit inside the Expo so I stuck it out the rear window. Rather than let the window bounce up and down and in order to secure the lumber from skidding side to side, I used the twine Lowe's so thoughtfully provided.

I had to make several cuts to the twine so I was using a German Robt Klass single blade slim trapper. It was a good EDC and fit nicely I my pocket.

I had secured the lumber so it wouldn't slide and the last twine I used was tying down the rear window. I had to lay on the ground to tie the end of the twine holding the window down beneath the bumper. I laid the Robt Klass on the bumper when I got up.

When I got home I reached for the Klass to cut the twine and remembered instantly where I had left it.
I did drive back to Lowe's (about 6 miles) looking for it all the way. I looked for it at Lowe's and asked a worker if a knife had been found...
I am still looking 10 years later.

On my 55 Pontiac wagon I have had stuff fall off the back and land between the bumper and the body. Fortunately the bumpers curl upward slightly on the bottom edge and will hold anything that happens to fall there. No knives so far but I haveretrieved a number of wrenches and nuts and bolts from the area.
