First Bone Handle Replacement/Inlaid Shield

Back in January I posted a question about how to inlay shields when replacing scales. (How to Properly Install Old Shields on New Handle Scales?) I received a lot of useful tips, particularly from Dale (Orvet Customs) and practiced for quite a while with exotic wood before trying my new skills on bone. I did the inlay free hand using a hand-held flex shaft tool that attached to my rotary tool (similar to Dale's Foredom) with a small rotary burr. This is my first attempt at inlaying the shield in jigged bone, so don't be too hard on me. In hindsight I wish that I had sourced a new shield instead of using an old beat up one that I had in the parts bin. This is a pattern 99 "Railsplitter" that I found a long time ago, minus any handle scales. I assume it is a 3299 1/2 that originally had celluloid scales. As you can see there is no pattern number on the pile side. I have seen Case Tested knives with no pattern stamp but am not sure if the Case XX tang stamp goes back to the days before pattern numbers were stamped on the pile side. The scales are "Goldenroot RJB Bone" from Culpepper. Not a perfect job, but I am pleased with the result. Best regards.

I like it. Perfection is probably not attainable doing this sort of work, but don't quote me on that! I'm working up the courage to do a Western folder using the factory shield so since I've never done it I'm giving you kudos for a well done knife! You can be proud of your work.

No doubt that a new shield would have helped, but it looks better than my first attempt!
