Nice assemblage of melon testers.When I was growing up in the 1950's we used to call them "Saturday night specials". Always carried in the back pocket of your jeans.For some reason not many people collect them. I have about a dozen of them;most from back in the day. My favorite is the 3 blade German one.

Those are some cool knives there. Haven't taken notice of them till now. Dumb question from a newbie..., were they really designed to test food with or is that just some kind of nickname they got ? Just curious.

Here’s my one and only. It was actually a POS package member, but it looks pretty good to me! It’s actually one of my oldest knives.

Nearly all knife patterns and blades were designed for a particular utilitarian purpose. Many times the nickname was derived from that purpose - sometimes stated in the manufacturer’s catalog, sometimes defined by collectors. These were in fact designed for “plugging” melons, cutting sausage or citrus fruit, etc.

The Kutmaster I posted was received with a shipment of seed from Willhite Seed Company, a major producer and seller of seed for watermelon and cantaloupe varieties.

This is my little ‘Billy’. It’s probably from the ‘50s, definately after WW2 as it’s West Germany. I’ve been using the same one in all the photos.

Nice one, Ann, they are perfect for measuring things at flea markets.

I had to be reminded by Quick Steel that I had a 62 also.

QS I had a Model 27 in 8 3/8 inch barrel. I loved it. Gone now.
