What the ???

I went to the for sale section, went to KA-BAR and saw this rather strange bit of improper information.
"The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company, which continued making the KA-BAR branded knives & eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation acquired KA-BAR in 1996."

The KA-BAR brand was never used by the Tidioute Cutlery Co, it was adopted by Union Cut Co in 1923. Tidioute Cut Co was sold to Union Razor which then became Union Cut Co.
I am a little appalled that a site such as this would say that KA-BAR was a Tidioute Brand. Also wondering why the for sale section is full of knives marked "sold" that were sold months ago?

Gunsil, I thought the sold knives were left for reference sake and to give an idea of price. I'm not sure about that but that is what I thought. I personally enjoy perusing that section for reference. For example the sold Bulldog ivory knives give me a hint of what to look for. JMO

Gene was the description you refer to provided by the seller? I agree it's a shame the information is incorrect but if so that's the responsibility of the seller. Not sure how AAPK can police that. ::shrug::

As for the sold listings I like being able to see what was sold and for how much. I do think a limit of 6 months or a year after the item was sold is reasonable. After athat the information is stale.

Regarding the "sold" items in the store searches, it is up to the seller. For example, I delete my sold items soon after the sale, so that I can track my store inventory against my spreadsheet. As soon as I delete a sold item, it will not show up in any search.

Thanks Steve! Ken, I see that KA-BAR "history" when I click on "browse by manufacturer" and then click on "KA-BAR" and that little description is at the top of the page, not part of a seller's description. I know many here are well aware that KA-BAR was a trademark of Union Cut Co that began in 1923, but there are a lot of folks who join here without a lot of antique knife lore and this statement one sees on that page could give them an improper view of history. I was just surprised about the length of time sold listings were left up when I saw a couple pages of knives for sale in any category followed by many pages of sold ones. I see now thanks to Steve that it is a seller's option.

In that case, being part of “official” AAPK I think it needs to be corrected. Tthere is far too much misinformation out there already so getting it right here on AAPK shoukd be a priority IMHO.

But I have no,idea how to,get it corrected. ::shrug::

If you think that is weird, check this one out (and this is so.... WTF, I think any knife guy can enjoy this from an ebay listing some ten years ago, which I have saved on my computer.):
"SCHRADE HISTORY: Schrade knives are certainly one involving America’s finest knives whose features received value through nationwide and also the globe at the same time. Founded in 1975 by Stewart Taylor, your Taylor Brand names possess created, allocated and also created high-quality knives which have slept higher than the game. Having its technologically advanced components, carbon metal knives have been the delight involving Schrade knives. Hand-crafted together with utmost detail, Schrade knives have created a name that is certainly regarded all over the world.

Having a number of models to be able to appeal to diverse discerning style, the particular SCHRADE KNIVES customized knives in order to meet the requirements of the buyers who will be either enthusiastic cutlery collectors as well as first-time people that are impressed using its overall performance. Deals with tend to be involving stag, metal, acicular bone, mommy of gem, buffalo grass horn, black and other durable resources that will tolerate fantastic force without suffering appearance. Getting one of these is sure to keep the collection a single chef’s knife seeking much better. Schrade has been supplying knives for civilians and troops likewise going back hundred years ago. However, these people never have usually tried it under the parent firm they are now under. That they used to be an independent company and have already been doing this beyond Ellenville, New York since the year 1904. With regards to three decades previously, they joined up with Jones and Wesson within the father organization Taylor Makes, in the Appalachian mountains of Kingsport, Tennessee. Because his or her brand modified does not always mean Schrade knives have grown to be any a smaller amount capable of ending up being named among the best knives on the market. They have interpreted their unyielding good quality to the modern day manufacturing techniques, bringing about more offered, exceptional knives that any of our fantastic grandparents will be proud to obtain. Unfortunately, it wasn’t constantly an even path with regard to Schrade. Several blade hobbyists scrambled to acquire a common cutlery while that for series. Tiny do they already know Taylor Brands would likely rapidly choose the model upward off the floor, pull out their own graphic, and initiate manufacturing knives below their own industry name once more.

That old Schrade knives, LIKE THIS ONE, tend to be well-known knives using this brand name. It’s been useful for the particular military as well as legislations enforcements due to the sturdiness as well as reliability. It has saw-cut addresses along with dime increases. Additionally, it has an inlay safeguard where the old timers press has become engraved. Considering that the manufacturing involving Schrade knives was halted. There are only a few of those that you can seldom uncover and you’ll need to look up well on the internet and using specialized retailers to get a single Schrade knife."

I'm a sucker for saw cut addresses and dime increases, but it looks like I may have to stand in line to get one.

Bruce, After chuckling my head off at your reply, I went back to find where he said this and have come to conclude "Google translate" must be the correct answer.
The mission then is to translate the translation which is quite rewarding in a insignificant way and fun too--but really not THAT much fun. So for instance:
Fantastic grandparents = Great Grandparents
Legislation enforcement = Law enforcement
Cross cut addresses and dime increases" Is a tough one. I think he is talking about cross cut bone handles and nickel bolsters perhaps. to "bolster" is to increase its strength, etc and GT just confused dime with nickel? I'm just going on "cross cut" to conclude its the handle material but can't figure what addresses is a mangling of.

dang, I think I need to get a hobby...

As far as straightening out that seller, can't somebody just send him a message and help him correct his history?

I toally agree that our mission as collectors is to not just preserve relics of our cultural past to pass on to the next generation of collectors, but also to correct the mistakes of our peers as well as our collecting forefathers and mothers. So when Goins says, that company A contracted their knives out to company B it's probably because he had one or two examples at hand that to him were obviously the work of company A. But the collecting world has expanded since the last edition of his book. Ebay gives us far greater access to old pocket knives and Worth Point retains pictures and details of every pocket knife sale since 2007. So it's our job to come in and say to anyone who will listen (so count my wife out) "Yes, A did make knives for B, but Q, R, X, and sometimes Y did also--here's proof! My motto: Collectors Correct! As a pattern collector I risk boring the hell out of folks always talking about the tickler/toothpick pattern, but the narrowness of my field alllows for better focus. So if Something Sargant (RIP) says in his book on a toothpick he has pictured doesn't strike me as being correct I'll leave no stone unturned until I either correct him, conclude he was correct or take a neutral position till some new intel comes along. He or his associates for instance get the 095 and the 093 pattern confused alot. But So do the Case catologs so...hell, it ain't easy...

I’m a high school foreign language teacher. I constantly warn my kids not to use Google Translate, it’s horrible. And they still can’t believe it when I give the 0% on an assignment they’ve obviously used Google Translate on. Until I read back to them a direct translation of what they’ve said. Lol. It’s priceless.

I went to Defense Language institute many years ago (USMC Spanish Linguist) and recall a story about a student in the Russian class who intended to write a research paper about the nuclear arms race but turned out it was about 2 old bald men fighting over a penis. ::uc:: ::woot:: ::dang::

oh, and I knew another guy in the russian class who would get drunk and go around saying "ya ochen' karandash" which is russian for "I am very pencil"

and yes, this was WAY before google translate.... :D
