All About Pocket Knives

This is a "Stone River" Chinese made knife (fit and finish is quite acceptable actually, blades center nicely, with excellent snap). Never carried it because I didn't like the spey blade much ... so the wheels start turning. I always liked the GEC Churchill but always heard of the weak snap issues, so I never wanted to take a chance shelling out that kind of cashola sight unseen. So, I figured I could work around that little swedge grind on this one & make it into a sheepsfoot. Tidied up the sweep and point on the clip blade as well. Surprisingly, it came out darn decent - I think this "almost a Churchill" will get some pocket time ...

Nice work, John. Was the steel (I'm assuming mystery 440 stainless) easier or harder to work with than the typical tru-sharp? Imagine what you could do with those Camillus Remington moose patterns that were all over the place for a while.

Keep dolling up those China knives and President Xi might be calling you to offer you a job before too long.

Hey John. You've done so many of these, what do you think of this Rough Rider Moose. Is there enough room on the spey blade from the nail nick forward to get the proper "swoop" to modify it into a Sheepsfoot blade?

It allllmost looks like the belly starts almost immediately below where the striker nick ends. That's gonna be a close one.

With proper tooling you could make a Wharnie with a long pull.

Thats a tough one Jerry - I'll print that one out & sketch it to see if it would work. Q and I ran into this problem with a Moore Maker trapper of his & a tapered lambsfoot was the best we could do with the nail nick position. That would work for sure for that rough rider trapper ...

Hey T - I noticed when sharpening it, the Chinese steel just seemed a bit softer than Case tru-sharp SS. Sometimes, feel can be deceiving though - after I've used it some, I'll report back...

I like that, way better than the spey. Once again, a nice job!!!!

Nicely done Lansky 1. I like that blade combo the mod provided and your work looks top notch.

Looks a lot like a Camillus-made Remington bullet knife, forget the model name, made in the 80s and 90s. These are excellent, well-made knives that can be had for like $35 new on Ebay.

That mod makes a much more desirable and functional knife (IMHO).
I never use a spey blade anyway.

I think that sheepsfoot mod is possible although the swoop would be very close to the nail nick...
