Fossilized Mammoth makes beautiful scales on knives. The intent of this thread is to capture images of knives with Mammoth handles. All makers, custom and factory, are welcomed. Let's see what you have!

In honor of Mr. Mammoth himself (kootenay joe) here is a Northwoods Esky Zulu that migrated from Canada to Texas.

Very nice Esky Jerry! Here are some I have.

First a whittler from Roland wearing Mammoth. (it's the whittler wearing Mammoth, not Roland) Then an Amherst with Mammoth scales.

These are all mighty fine knives but i feel most drawn to Ken's Case Slimlock. The piece of golden mammoth suits the knife so well, it looks like a $1000 custom. I did not know Case made such a pattern.

Mumbleypeg that Case slim lock really stands out.
Roland, obviously you didn't sell them all. Those are great knives.

Here is a Bulldog sunfish re-handled in mastodon ivory. The scrimshaw was done by Howard Thomas and the bolster engraving by Jim Downing. The image is Olive Thomas, silent screen actress and mistress of Flo Ziegfeld. In 1920 Ziegfeld commissioned the then young Alberto Vargas (famous pinup artist) to draw Thomas and this is a recreation of that drawing.

Thank you all for the nice comments about my SlimLock. I have been tempted so many times to carry it. The pile side is well matched, may be even better. IMHO these knives are among the finest cutlery Case has ever produced.

Wonderful knives all ... It’s amazing to me how many different looks there is to the handles but guess it depended on where the Mommoth tusk was buried and conditions over its long term burial... I don’t have any in Mammoth ivory (or mastodon) probably because the great majority of my knives are old (ie before this handle was used extensively) BUT I am really enjoying the show of them here ...

Great knives shown! I have always liked the Slimlock and that is one of the nicest I have seen, Ken, thanks for sharing. I really like mammoth ivory for its uniqueness and variety, one of my favorite handle material. I really like seeing the blues and greens.

Joel Chamblin trapper and a subhilt from Tim Steingass, which has ivory from Mark Knapp in Alaska, Mark is well known for having the best mammoth and walrus. The slabs are from Charles Turnage, another in the industry that has the finest mammoth, which are in Rick Menefee's possession now for a single blade dogleg.
Johnny Stout, very nice mammoth that is mueseum fit, which is a proud fit.

Kris, those are all beauties but the work on the SlimLock is extraordinary!

Hey guys! Absolutely drool worthy knives guys!
Now i know what i want to re-handle lots of my knives in...
Any of you guys know who could do it for me?
I want to try it on a brand new colonial usa barlow. It has white composition scales right now. It doesn't look to be a shell handle. The bolsters look solid, they are riveted on. I just want to be dead certain before getting pins busted. What do you fellars think?
Even though they are in really good condition I would like to deck this knife out. That is why i picked it up for $15 off the bay. Build quality is near perfect, higher end then my Imperials. Any suggestions would be great!

MontanaMan, that subhilt is gorgeous, I have been wanting one of those forever.

I have two mammoth ivory knives. The fixed blade is a Beauchamp. The peanut is from A.G. Russell, it’s his pinched peanut. The lines on this peanut are amazing so is the fit and finish, this one is my new EDC.
I don’t have many mammoth ivory knives. It’s getting extremely difficult to sell on Ebay, they want to flag it as ivory. So I have been avoiding it, but I still love it on knives.

Wow! Thanks all for sharing your amazing examples. I'm in a Northwoods and Tuna Valley cocoon with the few Mammoths that I have so it is great to see what else is out there in other brands and customs. Scrimshaw on mammoth would have never occurred to me and it looks really nice!

Montanaman the finished knives you showed are exceptional. It sounds like those gorgeous slabs are being fitted to a knife. Hope that knife can make an appearance here one day soon.

Ken based on comments others have made it seems like I'm not the only one surprised to see the mammoth Case SlimLock. The mammoth looks to retain the outer bark.

Greg and Q those are gorgeous. The pictures show the interior mammoth has a strong resemblance to ivory based on the color and the texture. Do you get the same impression with the knife in hand?

Jerry the custom is actually E Ivory but the Gec sunfish is identical in texture and feel.

Q, great looking knives, gsmith as well and wazo you as well. I think I like E ivory better but in reality sometimes I can't tell the difference.

If by "ivory" you mean Elephant Ivory, then, yes, I would have to agree with Greg: the interior mammoth has pretty much the same feel (texture). But the color issue can be tricky. Generally, mammoth ivory seems to be a shade on the dark side as compared to E. ivory, which is generally much whiter. However, I have seen antique E. ivory that has darkened (although usually more yellowish than brown like mammoth), and I have also seen some mammoth that is as white as E. ivory.

Case in point: When I bought this AG Russell Loveless style drop point hunter, I was told, and I fully believed, it was E. ivory (the brown color you see on the end closest to the finger guard is actually leather dye that stained the handle from being stored in the sheath too long). But, when I sold it, the good folks at The Cutting Edge informed me that it was actually mammoth ivory.
Here's a mammoth ivory Northwoods Esky Zulu that I bought in the lolly scramble when they first came out at KSF, but the blade was so badly off-center I couldn't stand it. So, I sold it about a month later--at a slight loss. I bet it would fetch twice as much (or more) as I originally paid for it if I sold it today, off-center blade notwithstanding.
And here's a mammoth ivory Lone Wolf Bob Loveless City Knife with factory scrimshaw (which I doubt I'll ever sell even though it has a small crack in the pile side scale). If I didn't know better, I would have a hard time distinguishing whether this was M. ivory or antique E. ivory.
