All About Pocket Knives

I broke tradition. The latest knife I purchased was wood instead of stag ( last 20+ knives have been
stag)

I fell in love with this sturdy knife and want to keep it in my car for any projects for my car
or outside cutting( prefer not to travel through the house to get a knife).

It cleaned up really great. There was some moderate rust on the blade which most was removed
but there is still some discoloration. I was thinking about give it a forced patina.

Any further suggestions on how to make the blade appear better appreciated!

I don't believe in pre-washed jeans, and I don't believe in a forced patina.
Just let 'em age naturally.

Kool knife.. I have a forced (white vinegar) patina on 80% of my carbon steel blades.. Folders/fixed.. Kinda like bluing steel in the old days.. The rust issues are reduced 75%-80%.. This has worked for me in the last 10yrs or so.. JMO..

Some of my knives seem more rust prone than others. Usually CASE is the worst for me. So if it’s joint to be a user I’ll put some vinegar on it or stick it in a potato. Keeps it from putting while it’s developing a natural patina.

I agree - there's just something about wood sided knives. My latest is a Case ebony wood trapper - ebony has a really tactile feel - I understand it's becoming very rare & many species are no longer commercially available.

I hear ya ... thats one pattern that ALOT of guys collect, especially the spanky clean ones. I've been looking to lowball one of those for years on eBay & hasn't happened yet.

What kind of wood is handle on O.P. knife ? Looks a bit like oak but i think it is something else.

Dig the rust out with a #2 pencil,peel your apples with the knife for a natural pantina then enjoy using that working knife..ENJOY

I believe walnut was used on a lot of 70s Case workin' knives that didn't feature some kind of laminate. I have two 11031SH's of similar vintage with the same grain and color, confirmed as walnut-handled. My '72 has almost identical characteristics: Straight line grain on the mark side and angled grain with an almost "spotty" appearance on the pile side.

Very great knives, BTW. Prices definitely on the rise, glad I got mine when I did.

Seconded!

I love nice wood on knives, guns and furniture, but it needs a big enough palette to show it off. Ebony doesn't have visible showy grain, but it works very well on even small knives.

I have a couple of wood handled fixed. The Pal Brand is actually my favorite fixed, probably my favorite knife, period. The little Pakistani is a hand me down from my son’s friend. I kinda like it’s fat little handle. It’s comfortable in my rather large hand.
