All About Pocket Knives

Kootney Joe has a thread in the for sale forum with a knife like I have never seen. The tang, at the back square and backstop stick out past the end of the bolster when opened, but everything is flush when the blade is closed.
I will post a link to the ad, and also borrow a picture of that knife to post here.

Do you have a knife with this design? Will you post a pic here if you do, please.

Is there a proper term for this design. I have never seen one of these until now, and I like it. A lot.

I would also be interested to know if the backspring is flush when the blade is opened. From the pic it seems that the backspring is low at the half stop.

I agree with you, it's a great build for a knife but it must be expensive to put together.

The flush and squared joints go way back, it's a nice touch of quality. I don't have any old knives with them but I have a number of gec 73's which are copies of the smaller brother (remington 1173) of the knife Roger posted and they have flush and square joints too.

It's a very common construction technique on much older Sheffield knives, but every knife so constructed is not that old.

It's very attractive to us collectors now, but I suspect there were reasons it was abandoned over time and evolved into the form of tang we see most often today, the most logical being that it places the utmost strain on a backspring during opening and closing. Whether such knives backsprings are broken more often than others, I have no idea.

I have two Camillus made Remington wood handled Bullet Knives that I think are so constructed. I'd have to look to make sure, but they are tucked away out of reach at the moment.
