All About Pocket Knives

Hello all, First post after having read 1,000s of pages of posts on AAPK. My head hurts from all the info I have tried to absorb. I am attaching a photo of "my collection" of knives from my youth. Nothing amazing here, but almost all of them have some sentimental value. The knives are a imitation pearl Buck USA folder, a small wood scaled uncle henry lockback from the 1980's, 2 uncle henry staglon folders from late 80s early 90s, a Syracuse knife company swiss army type knife, a frost barracuda, a no.8 Opinel, a no name taiwain duck knife, a 1973 jigged rosewood case folding hunter, and a hen and rooster bowie...blade says Toledo Spain.

I know this is borderline blasphemy, but the Case Russlock is what started me into collecting again. I had never seen anything like them and loved the look when someone on a hunting forum posted a pic of theirs. I had ignored pocket knives for many years other than a junker i had carried in my pocket for work and a large Schrade folder from the 80s i clean deer with.

I cant afford to keep buying case knives at the rate i have been, but the russlock has made me interested in other patterns now. Any need to start babying (mineral oil or wax) on new bone i dont intend to carry? Thanks to all those wgose posts have accelerated this sickness

Weirbel, welcome to AAPK! It probably won't be long until some other knife catches your eye like the Russlock did and and you'll have a handful of those before you know it.

Welcome to AAPK...posting. Nice knives you have there! I don't put anything, on the bone of the ones I don't intend to carry...but will be interested to see if anyone else does. I do put a thin coat of Ren Wax, on the new blades, of my knives with 1095 steel.

Weirbel - welcome to the forum! It is not blasphemy to like Russlocks. I have one and I think it is a very nice size for pocket carry. I just never was able to master opening it with one hand. Rheumatis or something in my hand. You do understand that just by the act of joining this forum and making a post you will probably become addicted to buying pocket knives?

Regarding your question - Mineral oil is great for restoring dried out bone and stag, but new knives in good condition don’t really need it. Renaissance Wax (often called Renwax) https://restorationproduct.com/about/ is great for infrequently handled knives, both blades and handle cover materials of all kinds. It was invented for and is used by the finest museums in the world for preserving artifacts. And it’s not expensive. Just be aware it will need to be re-applied if the knife is handled much. You can purchase it on line. A little goes a long way.

, then i am going to have to slow down for awhile and work some overtime. From all i have read and heard here i will be investing in some renwax for sure. I did get lucky and grab 2 glass display cabinets before family put them on yard sale. Didnt know what to put in them for several years, now i have it figured out

Going to take several years i think

My dad has the same issue with Russlocks and arthritis. Even if he could get it halfway open i dont think the blade would clear his palm due to the angle he has to hold the knife. I can open them with no issue, but struggled until i read about the correct orientation to hold the knife. I think its too late for me and the addiction

Don't over look the antique knives from days gone by. I understand they will clean deer too.

! I personally love the looks of russlocks, just haven't picked one up yet. Only one small problem, this is the worst place to go if you want to slow down buying

, can't stop no mater how hard you try

! You should see the load I have got coming in, about 20 knives

. Spent way more then was planning to. Want to buy only 1 knife and then end up with 15

You will be shocked and amazed at the speed of the addiction! Six months ago, I had one lonely Richards, a gassed out Queen. I just cracked twenty! That’s not counting watch fob knives, fixed blades, etc etc etc!
You’re gonna like it here...

Btw, the cure for sideways pics is to go to edit, hit the framing/cropping feature and take off a little slice of the top or side. Hit ‘done’ and when you post the pic, it will sit up straight.

Thanks for the tips on fixing my photos! For anyone wanting to try a Russlock on the cheap...the rough green delrin russlock can be found online for 29.99. I am not listing the website in case there is a rule against it but will pass the info along if anyone needs it. I think it is not very pleasing to the eye, but i didnt want to spend $60 on a knife pattern i might dislike in the hand
