All About Pocket Knives

A recent acquisition of an Al Mar knife leaves me needing to identify the artist.
I'll post the photos and hope for the best.

Ray you sure come up with some interesting knives.

I have a real appreciation of Al Mar knives as he was a bona-fide American hero as well as a fine cutler.

I like the knife but have no info on the artist. Perhaps a call to the company would be helpful. Let us know if you find an answer.

Thanks QS. They do not publish their phone number so I just sent them an email with all the questions on it. I'll let you know when or if I get a reply.

Ray if you can't get any info here look up Vintage AL-Mars on Facebook and post a photo there Stu Shaw may know he's pretty good at that

I could be absolutely wrong but the handle material looks like some kind of laminate to me. I see a definite group of lines that are not a part of the scrimshaw along the outside edge.

You may be right, Rotten. I see the lines you mentioned. I wonder about ivory micarta? There is no visible mat or such. I just hope someone from the company responds.

I just received an email from Al Mar Knives as follows:
The model is the "Eagle"

We have no idea who the artist was.

The handle material is Micarta

A.M.K.
At least that cleared up part of questions. I guess the artist will remain a mystery.

Ray, You could contact Gary Harbour. I think he keeps a record of scrimshaw artist. It isn’t a complete list but it’s pretty thorough. I contacted him last year about scrimshaw artist MW. He couldn’t find that one in his records, unfortunately.
I have some resources and will check. Will check back if I find anything.

Anyone can try their hand at scrimshaw. This isn't a particularly high-end example, but it is very nice in it's own right. I did a few pieces once, just to try my hand at it, sorry, no pictures remain of my work. One was a three-masted clipper ship, about the size of a silver dollar, done on a stag antler butt, that my wife kept in her wallet - she loves old ships. Once, she lost her wallet - it was returned to a police agency, everything was intact - just the ship was missing. I do have some ivory rounds that a friend sliced for me from an old cue ball, someday I may tackle another project. Try your hand at it sometimes, you will have a high degree of respect and admiration for any scrimshaw.
