Strangest thing!

A forum member was kind enough to mail me this box for a 501 Squire. The box was huge and large enough to hold a fixed blade knife.
Makes me think that at the time and moment they
used whatever box was available and slapped the proper tag on it.

I have a new Buck Ranger 112 with sticker date: 04/14/2009. The box is long enough for a 9" fixed blade (10" box). It is a 'generic' yellow Buck box with black lettering. The only thing that ID's it as a 112 is the sticker on the end flap.
I think you are correct about generic boxes.

Does the squire come with a sheath ?
That would explain the long box ?

A lot of the boxes for folding lockbacks are long enough to hold the sheath, flap open, and then the knife wrapped in protective wrap (knife sits on the flap). That box looks normal for a 501 shipped with a sheath (not all were). OH
