All About Pocket Knives

I keep looking at the cover of the latest A.G. Russell catalog and on the front cover is this beautiful Sunfish knife. Page 3 mentions that he loved this knife and wanted to remake it w/ different handle materials and subsequently did. I haven’t seen one like the one in the photo available, so wondering if this is already in production or one that is coming in the future? It’s not in the catalog or on the website.

Thanks Mustang, I never think to look there. Hope they are planning on bringing this back w/ some different handle materials.

I didn’t think to check for completed listings until just now. I found a few that have sold in the past, none for sale right now on Ebay. All of them brought more than they cost new. After watching that YouTube video, I can see why. I will be watching for my chance to get one in the future.

A.G. Russell says they will be releasing new Sunfish knives in April. WOHOO!
They didn’t say what handle materials. I think I will ask that as well. Will be surprised if they tell me.

Mary Ann at A.G. Russell told me that they don’t know for sure yet on the handle materials. Plural, so sounds like there will be mutilple choices on new handle materials. I will be watching.

The pattern was A.G.'s annual Texas Ranger knife several years ago.Also Scott King had a run made for I Knife collector forum. I have that one and will get it out and post it.

Here are 2 AGR China made Toenail pattern knives, both are 4 3/4" closed, and are part of a 9 knife "Texas Ranger" tribute series. They are CNC/laser robot precise and heavy at 295 & 280 grams (10.4 & 9.9 ounces). It is quite likely that the upcoming AGR Toenail will be on the same frame.
For comparison the GEC #46 Whaler is 4 3/8" and weighs 207 grams (7.3 ounces) with Desert Ironwood handles.
The GEC #36 is just under 4 1/4" and weighs 186 grams (6.6 ounces) with stag handles.
IF the new AGR is on the same frame as the Texas Ranger examples it will be larger and heavier than the GEC 46 pattern. However blade 'depth', spine to edge is the same for the 46 and the larger T.R., both are 38 mm.

This is the 2010 I Knife Collector year knife.These knives are made in China,but you would be hard pressed to find any better fit and finish.It is also comes dangerously sharp.

Roger the pattern looks the same as the Texas Ranger "187 Years of Service" knife. Is it app. 4 3/4" ?

Roland and Roger, Those are impressive knives. I had no idea the A.G. Russell knife was so heavy, that’s a big diff between those two manufacturer’s products. I’m looking forward to picking up one of these when they come out, I better do some muscle building in the mean time.

Yes Roland it is.I think the handles are something called Monkey wood.

In this month’s A.G.Russell catalog these are showing that they are available. However on the website it says temporarily unavailable. 4 handle materials; blue stabilized oak, G10, white smooth bone and brown jigged bone. Prices: 125 for the oak, 94.95 for the G10 and 99.95 for the bone handles. These are made in China, but anything A.G. has had made in China is very high quality as many of you already know. There are no pics of the smooth white or the brown jigged bone. Can’t wait to get one of these.
It’s interesting that this is the same size blade as the Texas Ranger Elephant Toe but this knife handle is shorter. They are using a patented system that A.G. designed called ILPS, or interrupted lockbar pivot system that allows the blade to occupy the same space as the lockbar pivot pin. I don’t remember seeing this on other knives he has produced. Anxious to see this up close. Anyone remember what other knives this was used on?

All of the China made Texas Ranger folders (8 of them ?) have what AG originally spoke of as a "coil spring" and a 'locking bar' that prevents blade from bottoming out and were described as being able to take a longer and deeper blade than a same size knife with the usual backspring/pivot pin construction. I don't understand the "coil spring' part and it is no longer in the description on his website.
I bet this new AGR Toenail is made by same manufacturer as the Texas Ranger knives which means the fit will be 'perfect'. If you have not handled one of the Texas Rangers you might never have seen this degree of 'perfect'. Made by laser guided robots ?
