All About Pocket Knives

I wonder if any of you knife mechanics have ever done this. I bought this Kabar 1152 camper knife at a flea market for $1, the master blade was broken off. I bought it with the idea of making a new blade from 1095 in the form of a Wharncliffe. I have done couple of others that turned out OK, but this one really got away. I had the blade all done except for cutting the pull, when for some reason I decided to try an alternate method than I usually use. I know what you are saying, "you should have tried it on a piece of scrap first". Well I didn't and it didn't turn out as expected and after making a couple more attempts to straighten and "improve it", it really did look awful. So after 2 more forays with the Dremel, I ended up with this. I actually thought I may have to cut all the way thru the blade and have a open slot pull like a Spiderco or something. But I finally STOPPED TRYING TO FIX IT and just put it in my pocket as an EDC. I showed it to my buddy Sundog, and he got a laugh out of it. He said it was perfect on a camper knife as I could use it as a water dipper to drink from the lake. I said I was going to use it as a soup bowl, and eat chili from the cavity when camping. Anyway it is what it is. Sure is ugly isn't it?

OC, does it work? I looked at the blade before I looked at the pull. If that is your worse mistake you are doing good.

Yes it does work, but it is just _________homely.

Old Cutler, it is only homely because you intended it to be something different. If you showed that knife to anyone who is not a knife fanatic I do not think they would ever question that it is the way it is supposed to be. For my part, I would certainly prefer that wharncliffe over the original spear blade and just figure it is custom made and that is the way the knife maker makes it!

I don't see anything wrong with it.

Myself, I am notorious for not trying to practice before doing it on the actual piece.

But the pull on a pocket knife blade should not be so big you could dip water from the lake or use it as a chili bowl. lol

I admired the blade a bit before I noticed the pull. It is not what you wanted, but it is not that ugly, either. Call it an "enhanced pull" and knife companies will be copying your idea!

Well, it's not as bad as a "spydie hole".

OC, nothing wrong with that blade. Great upgrade from the original.
Perhaps you have started a new trend: “The Compartment Pull Series,” “The Hollowground Pull,” or “The Lintpouch Pull Line.”

My wife is a very good cook. On occasion she will try and “fix” something in a receipe that did not come out right. After 53 years of marriage I can never remember the fix turning out bad or worse the the original. And yes she will rename the “fix”. I actually like your “fix” Of course it is not something that we are use to,of course it does not fit the original look of a nail nick,but it adds a little diversity and originality to the custom knife that you have personally designed great job.

Don’t say it is a mistake. Call it a “feature”. (I used to work in marketing).

Unless you have a special tool/machine for nail pulls they are very difficult and can easily get away from you. Metal is very unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. All in all I think the knife looks great. Maybe not as good as you would have liked but still some nice work there!

Knowing how and why it's that way gives it character. I like it.
Now, had it come to me like that from the factory, it would certainly be going back.
